Liege Province Travel Guide

Walloon Region
Liege which includes street scenes
Belgium’s most easterly province is a green oasis and the perfect destination for adventurers, culture lovers and shoppers alike.

Liège is in Wallonia and borders with the southernmost tip of Limburg and the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It’s steeped in history, culture and beautiful nature begging to be explored.

Wallonia is a primarily French-speaking part of Belgium, but it also has a small German-speaking community, Eupen-Malmedy, which has been part of Belgium since the 1920s. In the north, Liège borders with the Netherlands, where you will find the town of Vaals and the Drielandenpunt where the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany meet.

Liège is the province of the High Fens, a plateau which is part of the Ardennes and the Eifel, and where you will find Signal de Botrange, the highest point in Belgium. There's enough snow in winter to go downhill and cross-country skiing. If you're visiting in summer, you can go walking or cycling. Slightly more to the south, you can admire race cars on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

Life and culture in Liège generally take place outdoors. You can learn more about the industrial past in the old mines Blegny-Mine and LeBois du Cazier or visit the old abbeys in Maredsous or Orval and enjoy a refreshing Trappist beer.

If you would like to alternate adventure and culture with a trip to charming shopping districts and markets, you should go to the Marché de la Batte in Liège, the oldest and biggest market in Belgium. Centre Carré is Liège's shopping and clubbing district, and is great for a day of shopping or an evening out.

The province is easy to explore in and around cities such as Liège, Verviers and Malmedy. It's easy to get around by train and bus. Go to the NMBS (train) and TEC (bus) websites to plan your journey. If you’re travelling by car, the A2, A3 and A27 will get you to every corner of Liège.

There are several ways to travel to Liège: The train from London St Pancras takes 3:47, the car ferry from Dover just over 4 hours, and the Eurotunnel from Folkestone about 3.5 hours. If you're already on the continent and happen to be in the Netherlands, the drive from Maastricht will take about 30 minutes, from Rotterdam 2 hours and from Amsterdam 2.5 hours. You can also fly from all of the big cities. The flights will take you through Brussels or Antwerp.

The province of Liège: the green heart of Belgium that will seduce you with its nature and culture.
