Languedoc-Roussillon
The mountains meet the sea in this Mediterranean region, making it excellent for outdoor activities, coastal walks and lazy days in oceanfront towns.
Languedoc-Roussillon is a region in the south of France blessed with both towering mountains and beautiful beaches. Embark on arduous hikes up the peaks of the Pyrenees and sunbathe on remote stretches of sand. In between, feast on fresh seafood and savour wine produced from locally harvested grapes.
Modern Languedoc only came under French rule around 1500, but this wasn’t without religious struggle. The Catholic Church had a stronghold on the region, but the peasant classes rebelled by turning towards Protestantism. Discover remnants from both religions scattered throughout the region.
For outdoor adventures, heard north to the Black Mountains and the Cévennes. Hike up Mont Aigoual for views across the French Alps. Farther south, splash around in the natural rock pools at Gorges d’Heric, which are perfect for cooling off on a hot summer day.
The middle swathe of Languedoc-Roussillon is dominated by vine-covered rolling hills. Discover one of the region’s most visited attractions, the medieval citadel of Carcassonne. This towering UNESCO-listed fortress once served as one of France’s biggest defenses against Spain.
Along the coast, bustling cities such as Montpellier provide a cultural education. Wander the exhibits of European art in Musée Fabre. Further south, the classically French city of Perpignan features local markets, quaint bakeries and impeccably dressed residents.
For the best beaches, stop by the picturesque town of Collioure. This is where the Pyrenees Mountains meet the sea and the region is strewn with hidden coves filled with shimmering Mediterranean water.
Visit Languedoc-Roussillon from April to October for warm weather and for the best chance to witness a local festival. Vineyard parties and wine-themed events take place during the grape harvest in September.
Travel around the region by rental car or using the comprehensive train system between towns. Larger cities such as Montpellier have reliable bus and tram services and plenty of pedestrian routes for walkers.
Outside of the popular summer months, go skiing or snowboarding on the slopes of the Pyrenees to experience a different side of the region.
