The in-room description on the reservation through Expedia was different from the room into which we were booked. We were to have a “1 king, 2 bedroom suite, oceanfront” that priced out by Expedia from $550 to $560 per day (paid in advance through Expedia),not including taxes and fees. The hotel receptionist verified, the room we were actually booked into was a standard room, priced at approximately $325/day, not including taxes and fees and that we would have to work with Expedia for a refund. Expedia tried multiple times to verify the price differences and after at least 8 days, they informed us that they were unable to obtain approval for a refund from the manager. We also tried to speak to the manager. We were denied a phone number. We left multiple messages and never received a response. According to the receptionist, the manager, when she finally talked to Expedia, told them something about "room taxes,” indicating that what we had already paid did not account for room taxes. (Since we have not been able to talk to the manager we don’t know exactly what she reported to Expedia.) The manager may be confused, because our Expedia receipt shows that the higher room rate and room taxes were paid. Apparently Expedia can do no more for us. So, we are left with doubts about the efficacy of using Expedia to plan future travel, especially if hotels can switch the quality of a booked room at-will. We cannot recommend that any travelers plan a stay at the Kohea Kai Maui!
