Many prisoners died under appalling conditions during its construction, and the line became known as the 'Death Railway'. It was immortalised in David Lean's 1957 film 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' which centres around one of the line's main engineering feats, the bridge across the Kwae Yai river just north of Kanchanaburi. Although the film was shot in Sri Lanka, the Bridge on the River Kwai really exists, and still carries regular passenger trains from Bangkok as far as Nam Tok. For anyone interested in 20th century history, a visit to Kanchanaburi and the infamous Death Railway is a must. This page gives all the necessary information for train travel from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi, the Bridge on the River Kwai & Nam Tok, along with an overview of what there is to see in the area, including the Bridge Over the River Kwai, the Wampo (Wang Po) Viaduct and the museum at Hellfire Pass (Konyu Cutting). You can see the Bridge on the River Kwai as a day trip from Bangkok using the morning train out and afternoon train back, but it's better to make it a 2 or 3 day trip as there's a lot more to see than just the Bridge. A lovely hotel, with modern rooms and a wonderful setting. The rooms are really nice - very well put together. The spa was also excellent, if a bit more expensive than other places in Thailand. All the staff were exceptional - incredibly friendly and welcoming. The restaurant was a bit confused so dishes are a bit hit and miss, but overall no issue. Only inconvenient is that it is far from Kanchanaburi and surprisingly there is no tuk tuk waiting at the hotel to take you around 😃 so either you need your car or request a taxi from the reception. A special thanks to the lady at the reception who organised a driver to the Erawan Falls and the caves. The setting on the river is beautiful. We have one of the rooms with the kayaks, and these are easily accessible/ readily available. The only drawbacks were that there really is nothing to do in the local area, and to get into the town centre the only option is to use the hotel's taxi service (no other local services or Grab options available). There wasn't much privacy for sunbathing at the top of the room we had, but this was no trouble really. All day breakfast, with bubbles available with this too, was a good touch of flexibility (with food options being tasty) good value for the price. Clean, comfortable and very conveniently located for the BTS and other local activities (street food, massages, night markets etc.). Transport to and from the airport is handy too, via public transport. Even though we knew that it was outside Kanchanaburi we were surprised that every “taxi” ride to and from hotel was 400 baht one way or 700 return. Sometimes paid on the room and other times to driver. That price seems too expensive compared to other places in Thailand. Better solution to this and better information about who to pay for the ride when booked through hotel would be nice. Besides that hotel page said free pick up at arrival, but we were charged 400 baht for this also. At the price this hotel has pr night and given their location, pick up and drop off should at least be complimentary.
