The facilities are not what you would expect from a top end facility in a spa town. The public bath (men’s) felt decades old with soap/salt staining and old fittings. The private baths were a good facility/idea. Most corridors apart from the main lobby area had an unpleasant smell (musty, mouldy). Our room also faintly had this whiff. The staff are great - polite and efficient. Breakfast was good. The free snacks, sale, ice cream buffets were a good idea but don’t expect them to be top quality. The shuttle was handy. And the ryokan is well situated, a short walk away from charming Yamanaka town. As noted by other travelers.. this stay is a little out there.. the town Yamanaka is quaint.. with surprisingly not a lot of places to eat.. and we weren’t that excited about their breakfast menu.
