Rurikoh had many good services (free shuttle to/from Kagaonsen train station, spa w/massages, outdoor foot onsen, taiko drum performance, free afternoon snacks), a beautiful outdoor onsen and large indoor one, very good traditional Japanese breakfast, and very welcoming staff. Staff was very friendly and helpful. They had a drink and snack bar available when we got there. It was quiet and relaxing. The only thing that was confusing was that they told us we couldn’t eat at the restaurants at the hotel. Quality of the meals was disappointing. Room was spacious and clean but the property in general is tired and needs upgrading. It's a bit on the outskirts of the main part of Yamashiro Onsen but there's a bus stop across the street if you want to get into town. Onsens are great, room onsens are also well designed and modern. Rooms are very large; ours was traditionally designed. Taiko drums at 9pm is a fun option. Don’t be afraid to walk the neighborhood and eat at a local place. The locals might be a bit surprised to see you but they will embrace your presence. Stayed in a very hot summer so be prepared if you are coming at that time.
