Come to this northern Argentinian province for cactus-dotted landscapes, attractive colonial cities and the chance to learn about ancient civilizations.

Jujuy benefits from stunning landscapes and well-preserved archeological sites. Hike through gorges with a team of llamas in tow, marvel at a sparkling salt deposit and visit the ruins of ancient native settlements. 

Start in the well-preserved colonial city of Humahuaca in the west of Jujuy. This historic trade centre is part of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO-listed site made up of dramatic rock formations and Quechuan villages. For an authentic Argentinian experience, listen to the local folk musicians sing in the plazas and stop by a family-owned restaurant for freshly made empanadas.

North of the capital city of San Salvador de Jujuy is the village of Purmamarca. Wander through the stalls of the central square where local artisans sell textiles and ceramics. For some peaceful reflection, find a spot in town with views over the bordering hills. Try and identify the Cerro de los Siete Colores (the hill of seven colours), which is known for its various multihued rocks.

From Purmamarca, take a daytrip to Salinas Grandes, a vast salt deposit, for a truly unique experience. When it rains here, the cracks on the salt plains disappear and the deposit serves as a mirror, reflecting the surrounding landscape.

On the verge of Grande River sits the city of Tilcara, which hosts a notable archeological museum as well as historic adobe buildings. Head to the outskirts of Tilcara to explore Pucara de Tilcara, a well-preserved pre-Inca fortress and settlement. For an adventure you won’t soon forget, go sandboarding in the surrounding dunes or horse riding to Morado Hill.

Jujuy is a high-altitude province. Allow yourself ample time to acclimate as you journey upward into the mountains. When hiking, walk slowly and take frequent breaks. Bring plenty of sunscreen and a hat to shade your face and neck from the strong sun.  

While Jujuy welcomes tourists to the region, many areas are of the province are still relatively untouched. Enjoy the unspoiled natural landscapes and historic heritage of this charming region.
