Beautiful log home on river with Mountain View, 25 miles from Yellowstone
Only 25 miles from Yellowstone, this new (2023) real-log home sits right on the banks of the pristine Snake River just below its source at Big Springs and upriver from Macks Inn. In the summer, fish, kayak, raft or swim, there is nothing between you and the river. Located on 2 wooded acres, the home sleeps 16. There are 3 full bathrooms and 2 half baths, one being accessible from both inside the cabin and an outside door. The modern kitchen has a double oven and an induction cooktop. The large dining room table seats up to 14, and has a river view through riverside windows. The living room and loft also look out onto the river and meadows. The cabin is only a few yards away from the 6 million acre Targhee National Forest and only 22 miles from Yellowstone National Park. Wildlife sightings are frequent. There is plenty of room to explore and enjoy the beautiful view of the river and mountains. Float down the peaceful river in rafts or kayaks.
For an extra $100 per night, in addition to the main cabin there is a small summer guest cabin for those who want extra privacy and an "in the woods" experience. The cabin has a queen bed and double futon. There is no plumbing but a short path takes you to a half bathroom in the main cabin with an outside entrance.
A children's play set is close by. This cabin has everything your group needs to enjoy the mountain air. Grocery stores, golfing, restaurants and other amenities are within 2 to 5 miles away. The cabin has 2 kayaks, a canoe, internet, 2 washers and driers, fire pit, barbecue and much more.
ACTIVITIES
In the summertime the fishing is phenomenal and you are right on the river! You are also within easy reach of a number of other famous fly fishing rivers: the Madison, the Yellowstone, Warm River, Fall River, and Box Canyon on the Snake, to name some of the main ones. Henry’s Lake is also great for fishing from a boat.
Large rubber boats, kayaks, and inner tubes are available for rent nearby. They will drop you off at the boat ramp just below Big Springs, where the Henry’s Fork of the Snake (a.k.a. the North Fork – the river our Cabin sits next to) comes up out of the ground (technically, the Yellowstone Aquifer finds its way to the surface at that point). It’s a 4 mile float back down to the Cabin. We also suggest a rubber raft trip down Box Canyon, further down on the Snake, coming out at Last Chance.
Be sure to visit the bridge at Big Springs where the headwaters of the Henry’s Fork originate. While there, tour the John Sack Cabin – a short walk away, through the campground south of the Springs. There are some truly massive rainbow and hybrid trout that rest under the Big Springs bridge during the summer. The best food for tempting them out from under the bridge is whole kernel corn. As you might suspect, Big Springs is a rigorously enforced no fishing area.
There are endless trails for ATV, motor cycles, bikes and walking in the area. Many local shops have an excellent hiking guide. A car drive to the top of Sawtelle Peak gives breathtaking views of the whole area. For hikers, we recommend Targhee Creek Trail, which is signposted off Highway 20 heading north, a few miles after the junction with Highway 87. The trail is moderate and the spring wildflowers in July are abundant.
There are a couple of rodeos around, depending on the timing of your stay. A very fun one is located on Red Rock Road (about 3 miles north of Mack’s Inn, on Highway 20), then west to the Meadow View Ranch. Tickets include a Dutch oven dinner.
The Island Park Reservoir and nearby Hebgen Lake offer water sports. You can rent boats and wave runners at Last Chance. There are also various types of ATVs. Local shops in Island Park Resort, much closer to the Richards Cabin (~1 mile north on Highway 20), rent similar equipment.
Harriman State Park, just south of Last Chance on Highway 20, has great nature trails, historical old ranch buildings built by the Harriman family of New York, and is home to a large trumpeter swan flock on its Golden Lake. The $5 fee per car is also good at Mesa Falls.
A MUST SEE is Mesa Falls, both Upper and Lower. Walk the boardwalks around the magnificent falls, and visit the animal exhibit in the lodge next to the Upper Falls. The road to Mesa Falls takes off from Highway 20, down by Harriman State Park.
Eagle Ridge Ranch offers horseback riding for all ages.
Try a hike to the Coffee Pot rapids. The trail leaves the Coffee Pot Campground, then follows the river for 2 miles to the rapids. It is a truly beautiful hike. In late July and August, there are often ripe huckleberries along the trail.
Golf at Island Park Village.
To visit Yellowstone National Park – take Highway 20 north. Just past Henry’s Lake, the highway will turn east and cross the Continental Divide, entering Montana. The Park’s west entrance is in West Yellowstone.
West Yellowstone has a number of fun attractions: - A Grizzly and Wolf Center - A Ropes and Zip Line course - White water rafting on the Gallatin River - An IMAX theater
Seriously consider the Playmill Theater in West Yellowstone, a regional summer theater drawing its talent mostly from Brigham Young University Idaho. You will need reservations'
Back at the cabin, relax on the porch. Wave to the floaters drifting down from Big Springs. Offer them homemade cookies. You will make lots of new friends. Enjoy the view of Sawtelle Peak. Watch for wildlife. Besides moose, animals we have spotted include River otters, beavers, muskrats, mink, pine martins, skunks, squirrels and many bird species, including ospreys, sandhill cranes, blue herons and bald eagles.
In the winter, enjoy snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and relaxing by the fire while viewing the river and wildlife through the large windows. Snow machine rentals are available nearby. Beautiful groomed XC ski trails close in Harriman State Park.

We had a fantastic vacation at this place. We spent hours sitting on the back porch talking with the folks floating down the river, watching wildlife ( a moose visiting us every day), fly fishing, and just enjoying one of the best overall views on the planet. Half hour from Yellowstone and grocery, gas right down the road. Hosts are beyond five star, and have thoughtfully provided everything you need. Be sure to read the Cabin binder, that provides a history of the property.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this amazing log home cabin. It was even more exquisite than the listing indicated. The views of the river and surrounding wetlands and forest are exquisite! We watched moose grazing across the river, blue herons fishing along the banks, fly fishers, kayakers and paddle boarders, all from our lovely back yard. The cabin is well appointed, check in and out were a breeze. Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful home!
Perfect for two families, with two masters on the main floor and plenty of space upstairs for the kids. Could use a stockpile of cooking supplies spices/oil etc. as other than salt and pepper there wasn’t anything. Couldn’t use the back patio at all as the mosquitos were so bad that we were afraid to open the doors as they invaded the house anytime we did. But that is no fault of the house itself.
Great location with restaurants and stores nearby but still felt isolated.
This is the best place to stay for our family. We love to float the river and we can watch moose, pelicans, osprey and other wildlife right from the front porch. It is magical.
Absolutely stunning cabin and location. We cherish the moments were are able to spend in this special location. The owner and manager are awesome and very easy to work with. We look forward to our next trip here.
We absolutely love this cabin and its location. We can fush and float all we want to. You can sit on the front porch and see osprey and moose just to nane a few things. We had a wonderful time.

Beautiful Historic Cabin on Riverfront - Peaceful Prime Location
Loved, loved, loved this cabin!
Attentive owners/property manager. The location could not be better....we would like to move here and never leave the front porch.
Thanks so much to the Porters and to Mike for such a lovely vacation.

Incredible property! We absolutely loved the seclusion, the river access, the moose and birds, and an otter we saw swimming across the river one evening. We especially enjoyed the massive front porch, the two kayaks, and the propane grill. The house is beautiful, cozy, warm and provides breathtaking views of the mountains and water. It was perfect for our group of 6 adults, with plenty of room to spare. The local town of Island Park is awesome—a great little grocery store, some awesome restaurants, and located near loads of hidden gems—Mesa Falls and the trail by Johnny Sacks Cabin, to name a couple. It’s just a scenic 25-minute drive to West Yellowstone, which we made several times with no problems. Highly, highly, highly recommend this property!
Our stay at the riverside cabin was incredible. My boys loved using the kayaks and canoe's that were part of the cabin, and the views from the front porch were incredible. The cabin was nice and clean. The fire pit was huge so we had great fires at night. The wildlife was the most amazing! We had a mama and baby moose that we would see often. Mike the caretaker was always available with any questions we had about the cabin or the area. The only recommendation I would make is one more garbage can, and the yard could have been mowed. I would definetly y stay here again!

Family Camp! Ospreys, moose and great blue herons come to you! No need for TV.
There's a history here, with the "family camp" feeling created by the original cabin, and the other buildings visible behind it. All that's missing is a dinner bell.
The property details indicate that it sleeps 12, but 5 adults or 3 couples would be more like it, unless older children doubled up or slept in the bunk house. Young children need constant supervision in order to be safe.
Comfy gliders on the front porch for watching wildlife (including people!) Great blue herons, duck families and osprey are common.
Be sure to check out Big Springs (only 4 miles up the road). It's magical!
We have stayed in every cabin from wapiti, WY to Island Park, ID to Pray, MT over 17 yrs Its the best spot out there! Incredible fishing. Moose everywhere. As good as it gets!
The cabin is rustic, we called it glamping. But it had everything we needed and was comfortable. The location was peaceful and secluded. We saw several moose, birds, and ducks. We plan to stay here again.
There were plenty of beds for our party of eight, with two bedrooms in the main cabin, a one bedroom annex, and a bunk house. Like other historic properties where we have staid, the two bathrooms were small, but the hot water did not run out. The overall feel was cozy, and the setting is gorgeous.
We saw moose and osprey from the cabin, and enjoyed sitting on the front porch waving to those kayaking and rafting the river. We visited Yellowstone and a local waterfall, and rafted down the river.
Our stay at this jewel on the river invigorates us! We spend the rest of the year planning for the time when get to come back. The view out the window is like nothing you will experience anywhere else. We love it!
We loved staying at this cabin to celebrate my dad's 60th birthday! We enjoyed fishing from the bank in front of the cabin in the morning & evening. We also kayaked and paddle boarded to and from the cabin. The 2 kids under 4 really enjoyed the playset. We had 4 families coming together and there was more than enough room to park and spread out. This was a nice, charming cabin for us to get together!
