Watch the lively stream rushing below your feet when you walk through the preserved hall building on top of the northern floodgate of Hwaseong Fortress.

Hwahongmun Gate is a beautifully preserved bridge crossing the leaping waters of Suwoncheon Stream. The gateway faces due north and is one of four gates and water gates of the Hwaseong Fortress complex. Check out the gateway’s grand archways topped with a magnificent building. Take a moment to sit on the floor of the traditional hall and listen to the sounds of the water rushing below you.

If you enter the Hwaseong Fortress via its southern entrance, Paldalmun Gate, and begin exploring the old city walls, Hwahongmun Gate will be your midway point. This popular walking tour can be taken alone or with a guide and provides a unique insight into the historic fort complex. Make your way along the preserved stone walls and see the old watchtowers, battlements and gateways on your way.

When you reach Hwahongmun Gate, you’ll see why it is regarded as one of the highlights of the complex. The low granite bridge has seven archways to allow the stream to flow through. Note that the gate’s local nickname, Hwahong Gwanchang, translates to “watching the rainbow over the flooding river.”

Climb up the stairs and stroll across the bridge and into the traditional-style hall that sits on top. Take a break from your walking tour and rest inside the hall. Enjoy a tranquil moment appreciating the sound of the Suwoncheon Stream, which flows through the fortress from north to south. Alongside the gate’s hall, notice an exquisite traditional pavilion. Known as Banghwasuryujeong, this pavilion is a beautifully preserved example of traditional Joseon-era architecture.

Hwahongmun Gate is located on the northern side of the Hwaseong Fortress complex. There is an admission fee to enter the complex.

Hwaseong Fortress is open daily year-round. Stop at the visitor centre on the western side to pick up a site map and join walking tours. Take the tourist trolley, which includes an audio guide available in English. Alternatively, go on a self-guided walking tour and make Hwahongmun Gate one of your stops. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes for the walk around the walled complex.
