The far-reaching views to be seen from every window inspired the poetess, Francis Horowitz, who lived in the cottage in the 1980s. There are some lovely walks from the door, particularly to Garway Hill, said to be the most beautiful place in Herefordshire, offering stunning views over 5 surrounding counties. The cottage is also ideally placed for you to experience canoeing along the Wye River, swimming in the River Monnow, or hiking on Offa’s Dyke or The Three Castles Way. Horse-riding, rock climbing, canoeing, fishing and caving are all within easy reach in the Wye Valley, the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons. The cottage is also close to the Forest of Dean with its cycling paths, picnic sites, Sculpture Trail and family attractions such as Go Ape. A 20-minute drive away is the cathedral city of Hereford, and the market towns of Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth, which host a variety of quality restaurants and independent shops. For sightseeing, memorable days out can be had at the Blaenavon World Heritage Site, the Roman Caerleon, and Goodrich, Raglan or Eastnor Castles. Golf is possible at Hereford, Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth, and racing found at Chepstow and Cheltenham. The famous book town of Hay-on-Wye is reached after a beautiful drive through The Golden Valley. After a busy day exploring all that Herefordshire has to offer, enjoy an evening dining in the garden, watching the sun set over the glorious countryside. On the cottage’s ground floor, beyond the entrance porch, you will find the kitchen, with its beautiful wooden work surfaces, food preparation island, and the easy-to-use, hard-to-beat electric Everhot cooker. The kitchen is well equipped for making casseroles, cakes, and tray bakes. The open-plan dining room is the perfect space for enjoying meals with family and friends around the large farmhouse-style table. There are two steps up into the living room with its large, comfy sofas, the wood burner and a smart TV. If you want to get away from the television there is another living space in the glorious sunroom, which has folding glass doors leading out onto the south-facing front patio. There is a ground-floor toilet and a separate utility room with a washing machine and tumble dryer. On the first floor you will find three bedrooms, one with a large spring pocketed super king-size bed, and the other two with twin beds. The bathroom has the best views from the cottage and has a stand alone roll-top bath, shower cubicle, handbasin and toilet. Off-road parking for up to three cars is available in the gravel yard opposite the cottage, just across the road, where there are also some fruit trees. There is a pub just under a mile away, and a village shop and post office just under 2 miles away. The house is easily accessible from the M50, with Bristol or Cardiff only an hour away. The cottage can accommodate six adults, plus a cot is available for a child under three years old. Booking is for a minimum of three nights. There is a 25% discount for a 7 night booking for most of the year. ## Property amenities ### Internet - Available in the cottage: Free WiFi ### Parking and transport - Parking on site ### Kitchen - Coffee grinder - Coffee/tea maker - Cookware, dishware, and utensils - Dishwasher - Electric kettle - Hob - Kitchen island - Microwave - Oven - Paper towels - Refrigerator - Spices - Toaster ### Dining - Dining table ### Bedrooms - 3 bedrooms - Bedsheets provided ### Bathroom - 1.5 bathrooms - Bathtub - Bathtub or shower - Hair dryer - Shampoo - Soap - Toilet paper - Towels provided ### Living spaces - Dining table - Fireplace - Living room - Wood stove ### Entertainment - Books - Games - Smart TV - Stereo ### Outdoor areas - Fenced yard - Garden - Outdoor furniture - Patio ### Laundry - Laundry facilities - Washing machine ### Comfort - Heating ### Pets - Pet friendly - Welcoming dogs only - 3 pets total ### Suitability/Accessibility - If you have requests for specific accessibility needs, please contact the property using the information on the reservation confirmation received after booking. - Area rugs in public areas - Cobblestone flooring in public areas - Gravel flooring in public areas - Hardwood flooring in public areas - Stair-free path to entrance - Thin carpet in public areas - Upper floors accessible by stairs only - Smoke-free property ### Services and conveniences - Iron/ironing board - Phone ### Location highlights - In a rural location - In the mountains - Near a hospital ### Things to do - Bicycle parking - Birdwatching nearby - Fishing nearby - Golfing nearby - Hiking/biking trails nearby - Horseback riding nearby - Hunting nearby - Kayaking nearby - Motor boating nearby - Mountain biking nearby - Mountain climbing nearby - Rafting nearby - Rock climbing nearby - Spelunking nearby - Swimming nearby - Wildlife walks nearby - Winery tours nearby ### Safety features - Carbon monoxide detector (host has indicated there is a carbon monoxide detector on the property) - Smoke detector (host has indicated there is a smoke detector on the property) - First aid kit - Fire extinguisher ### General - At least 80% lighting from LEDs - Bicycle parking - Eco-friendly cleaning products used - Garden - Local artist showcase - Locally-owned and organised tours and activities - Recycling - Solar energy - Unit size: 1,511 square feet ## Similar properties ![Fridge, microwave, oven, stovetop](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/71000000/70270000/70260600/70260514/e68ac283.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Camp Cottage the perfect escape and hideaway for a couple and dogs Brockhampton - Kitchen - Washer - Dryer - Pet-friendly 9.8 Exceptional 7 reviews [](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Hotel-Search?startDate=2025-12-03&endDate=2025-12-04&selected=70260514&PinnedHotelID=70260514&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Exterior detail](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/34000000/33610000/33605500/33605410/e57ecace.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Beautifully converted stone barn with amazing views towards the black mountains Monmouth - Hot tub - Kitchen - Washer - Dryer 9.8 Exceptional 90 reviews [](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Hotel-Search?startDate=2025-12-03&endDate=2025-12-04&selected=33605410&PinnedHotelID=33605410&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Exterior](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/34000000/33920000/33916200/33916155/2d61785c.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### The Apple Store, Great Doward In The Wye Valley Whitchurch, Ross on Wye - Kitchen - Washer - Dryer - Pet-friendly 9.8 Exceptional 133 reviews [](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Hotel-Search?startDate=2025-12-03&endDate=2025-12-04&selected=33916155&PinnedHotelID=33916155&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Terrace/patio](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/34000000/33660000/33650300/33650232/a3918693.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Luxury Self Catering Cottage in Historic Village Setting in the Forest of Dean Newland - Kitchen - Washer - Dryer - Pet-friendly 10 Exceptional 56 reviews [](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Hotel-Search?startDate=2025-12-03&endDate=2025-12-04&selected=33650232&PinnedHotelID=33650232&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Interior](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/34000000/33610000/33601400/33601358/23eaa5bc.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Picturesque Cottage In Symonds Yat - Dogs stay free + no charge for fire wood! Really spacious and comfortable- even better than the photos. Kitchen was especially well equipped. Quiet location with places to walk the dogs locally. Short drive to main roads and plenty to do locally. Not a huge garden but lovely outlook and secure for the dogs, very private and felt like we were getting away from it all. The cottage is pretty near perfect, quiet, spacious and very well equipped. The log burner and cosy lounge with large comfortable sofas made for our stay to be the peaceful retreat that we needed. Cooking was a pleasure in the well equipped kitchen and the cooker, although a challenge, made the experience more interesting and enjoyable. All in all the cottage is one of our favourite places to stay. We will be back!! ##### Jacqui D. It is beautifully furnished and spacious, with glorious views, nestled in the middle of rolling countryside. The local farm shop (Little Pengethley) has delicious food and you can get fresh eggs even closer from the vicarage in St Weonards (delightfully there is an honesty box, and you select and pack your own eggs). It's a lovely walk down to the village, where there is also a local shop for essentials. We had a fun day trip to the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo (about 20 mins drive) which the children adored; there is also a giant maze, crazy golf and a tea room onsite. We loved the whole stay and hope to return soon for a longer break. ##### Nicola P. We all loved it too! There was plenty of space for the 6 of us- all the rooms are spacious and full of character. A lot of thought had clearly gone into providing pretty much everything we needed. The cottage is on a quiet lane with sheep in the field next door and views of the wonderful countryside. A peaceful place to relax, read some of the many books and take the odd stroll or run round the lanes. There is comprehensive information about the area for a more active stay. We used it as a base to go to the Hay festival, and it was a joy to return to in the evening after a long day of stimulating events. I highly recommend this cottage. Thank you Sandra. ##### Jane M. The property is beautifully presented, cosy and warm with well equipped kitchen. The cottage is perfect. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the new year in surrounded by the beautiful scenery. After days out in Hereford and Monmouth we found our evenings cosied up in front of the wood burning stove to be a perfect end to the day. The endless supply of wood was such a blessing on the cold December nights! The country style, well equipped kitchen made our choice to cook a pleasant experience and the dishwasher was an appreciated bonus. The beds were found to be comfortable. It was a real luxury to sit in bed in the mornings with a cup of tea overlooking the stunning scenery. Across the road we found Marina to be helpful and pleasant. All in all a perfect mini break. We will return I'm sure. Thank you. ##### Jacqui D. The house is beautiful, spacious, and comfortably furnished, including a very well-stocked kitchen and comfy beds. The location is really quite perfect. St. Weonards is midway between the Wye Valley and Brecon Beacons, where we spent many days walking in the marvelous countryside. Closer by are plenty of castles, pubs (including the Fountain, which lucky for us had just reopened), and short hikes, such as up Garway Hill. Hereford and Monmouth are both just around the corner, so there's plenty of shopping. And on afternoons when we didn't feel like doing anything, we had fun looking out the window at the sheep in the field across the street! The cottage is really a perfect blend of isolated and in the thick of it---it's hard to describe, but exactly what we wanted. There's ample parking in the little lot across from the house. The roads are rather intimidating at first---very narrow with tall hedges on either side, and the occasional tractor barrelling down from the opposite direction---but we got used to driving rather quickly. It helps that the locals are very sensible drivers. Lastly, I highly recommend a visit to Hay-on-Wye. Spend some time in Addyman's bookshop, then have high tea at the Old Stables tea room. ##### Shahed S.
