The province got its name from the river Harjan, and it boasts unique traditions and culture. Much of the culture is connected to the traditional way of herding cattle to particular places near the mountains to graze during summers.

Spend Christmas in Lofsdalen to meet the town's charming mountain Santa Claus. Here kids will be spoilt for choice of activities, such as their own after ski and Harjedalen's biggest indoor playground. You can also rent a canoe, trek in the mountains or go biking in idyllic Vemdalen, with plenty of things to do all year round. In Sveg you can explore Kulturcentrum Mankell, dedicated to Henning Mankell, the author of the Wallander books, displaying many of his original manuscripts.

Harjedalen has a regional airport with bus transfers to Funasfjallen, among other places. There are several flights a day from Stockholm to Härjedalen Sveg Airport, so you have lots of travel options to choose from. You can also take the train here from many places in Sweden, and once you get to the skiing areas you can take a skiing coaches between the different resorts.

A holiday in Harjedalen is ideal for skiers and nature enthusiasts alike. Thanks to the location of the province, the weather is perfectly suited to skiing in the winter and mountain walks during the rest of the year.
