At the meeting point of a lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean is a beautiful beach renowned for the striking colour of its water and dramatic cliffs.
Gunga Beach (Praia do Gunga) is a true tropical haven and one of the most attractive beaches on Alagoas coastline. View this jaw-dropping natural setting that consists of piercing blue water, pristine white sand, coconut groves and cliffs. Gunga Beach spreads around a peninsula at the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and Roteiro Lagoon. The union of these two water bodies produces the sea ’s mesmerizing colour.
The northernmost tip of the peninsula is the beach’s busiest area, where bars set up tables on the soft sand. Grab a front row seat, order a cold beer or refreshing cocktail and enjoy the views. Note how the water changes from shades of blue to green with the change of the tides. Walk east from the peninsula and you’ll discover an almost deserted stretch of perfect sand backed by dunes covered in thick vegetation.
Feel refreshed with a dive into the warm and alluring sea. The water is calm and clear enough to spot fish with the naked eye. If you are feeling energetic dabble in water sports such as fly-boarding, Jet Skiing, water sled rides and wakeboarding. For fun out of the water, walk inland for about 20 minutes to admire the views from Gunga Viewpoint.
As the beach travels south, the swaying coconut palms gradually stop and the ocher-hued Cliffs of Gunga begin. Get here via rented beach buggy and quad bike or on a guided buggy tour. Park on the beachfront and then wander amid the cliffs, which resemble the landscape of a canyon.
Find Gunga Beach 27 miles (43 kilometres) south of Maceió and 6 miles (9 kilometres) from the village of Barra de São Miguel. Travel agencies run daily bus tours to the beach and cliffs from Maceió. A popular excursion involves boarding a schooner boat at Barra de São Miguel, sailing across Roteiro Lagoon to the beach and then continuing to the cliffs.
