About this property
View from Quality Hill overlooking historic district, quick walk to downtown
Built in 1856 by Asa Haile, a licensed riverboat captain and successful mason, this classic Federal-style brick home with Greek Revival accents is located up on Quality Hill, where mansions overlook the entire historic district of Galena. A quick 5-minute walk (maybe a bit longer on the way back up) puts you directly on Galena's Main Street, named “One of America’s best Main Streets” by Fodor’s.
The front porch is the key to your stay at Asa Haile House. The view is fantastic, whether with a cup of coffee watching the town wake up or an evening sunset out towards Horseshoe Mound. Some evenings lightbeams can be seen over by Pilot Knob as a barge searches its way up the Mississippi River. No matter what the season; spring, summer, fall or winter, the porch is AWESOME!
Inside the house is a culmination of love and dedication as Pete & Tacie Campbell took ownership of the property in the early 1970s. Their influence can be enjoyed throughout the 2,700-sqf house as both were historians; Pete ran the Illinois state historic sites in Galena and Tacie was the curator at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque, IA as well as working early on for the Galena Historical Society. Time can easily disappear while hanging out in the front or back parlor, or upstairs in the front room. The bedrooms are comfortable and a great end to your day of doing whatever… or doing absolutely nothing.
The property is still family-owned by Pete and Tacie’s two sons and their families. No matter what you end up doing (shopping, dining, antiquing, wine tasting, historic walking tours, river floats, winter skiing and more), The Asa Haile House is a great way to experience Galena and all of it’s historic charm.

We enjoyed the stay. The view from the front porch is excellent. The beds could be upgraded to queen size and a more comfortable sitting area in the main living room would really upgrade the experience.
The beautiful historic home was the perfect location to have a private space with friends. The front porch was great for drinking a beverage and socializing and the quick walk down to shopping and restaurants made it easy for individual excursions.
Gorgeous view, pretty home. It was fully of charm and had everything you need. The owners were easy to reach out to with any questions and were super friendly and helpful!
Great location - walking distance to everything on main st (although be mindful that it’s about 200 steps to climb when returning). Nice view. Clean house.
The Asa Haile House was a perfect setting for a friends reunion weekend. It's a gorgeous house. Watching the sun rise over Main Street and the foggy hills in the distance with coffee on the porch to wine on the lovely courtyard at night can't be beat. Highly recommend!
The home is beautiful - like taking a step back in time and staying in a house from the early 1900s. There were five of us in our late 60s - the stairs were difficult for one of us and we could have used one more bed, but everything was very clean and comfortable and in a great location to all things Galena. Host were great!
Home has plenty of space for 3 couples. View from front patio is spectacular. The walking distance to main street was nice…the hill coming back to the house can be a little tiring!
Antique beds and floors are decent but do make a good amount of noise.
very comfortable historic home.. fantastic view of the town.. everything works!! plenty of outlets, lights..
narrow, steep stairs.. of course.. great place to stay
thanks so much.. ps what a library..
Beautiful view of Galena; historic home gave us a good feel for living well in the 1850s (except for modern conveniences); easy drive to downtown. We would not recommend this home if you need a walker, wheelchair, or other walking aids; parking in the back alley was a bit of a challenge for our mid-size SUV.Overall, we had a pleasant stay.
We stayed here for my best friend's bachelorette weekend and had the best time! The house is huge and was more than enough space for the 4 of us. We loved all the little details and decorations. The location was so convenient: we didn't have to drive anywhere if we didn't want to. Those stairs on the way back up the hill, though... wear your walking shoes!
We had a great weekend in Galena. Robert’s property has the best views and is a great location. You are minutes from downtown Galena. Yes, there are steps. Our group ranged in age from 52 to 74, the 74 year old had hip replacement in July and was able manage the steps with no problems. We’d stay here again!
Staying in the charming older house was a unique experience! The rich history and massive book collection added a wonderful touch. Its proximity to downtown Galena was a big plus, and the owners' responsiveness was appreciated. Although we wished for more cozy and comfortable seating, our busy schedule kept us on our feet. The front porch with its beautiful views was a highlight and provided a wonderful place to unwind and take in the surroundings.
This property was very unique and charming. There were a few things I wish I had known beforehand, like that the bedroom with twin beds was a set of bunk beds and that there was only one bathroom with a shower, but even so I don’t think these things would have deterred me from staying there. Can’t beat the location! The property owners were incredibly attentive and responsive, even checking in to be sure we had everything we needed mid-trip. It was a great choice for a long weekend!
Beautiful historic home filled with charm. Views from the front porch were breath taking!! Very peaceful area, perfect for relaxation. Wonderful communication. Any questions or concerns were promptly addressed. The Campbells were pleasant. We were greeted by email before, during and after our stay. Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a peaceful retreat and has a love for history.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your place. The beds were very comfy, and we used every room whether it was talking into the wee hours of the night in the sitting room or playing cards in the dining room. Two things that may be improved: musty odor was noticed at the door we entered and kitchen. This odor seemed to dissipate the next day which was good since I am allergic to mold. Also, a step stool may be helpful to future guests for the one high bed (one guest was alittle short). Other than that we enjoyed our stay and thank you for the wine!
The pictures in the description do not do justice to the charm of the house. My mom, sisters, and myself fell in love with house and the trip back in time. We stayed in Galena on one of the hottest and humid weekends of the year but the rooms were adequately supplied with air conditioners. Although it was hot and humid we enjoyed our time on the patio both nights as it was a nice private space. The stairs getting going down to Prospect street are a little sketchy but we made sure to watch our step and take our time. There are approximately 159 steps from the house to Main Street. So if you plan to walk to the shops, be prepared. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and appreciated the charm of the house.
We enjoyed the stay overall. However, it needs some love.
The front bedroom bed is too high. I’m 5’6” and I had to do some effort to get on bed. The bunkbeds are too noisy to sleep. We had to put mattresses on floor to get some sleep. The front bathroom toilet ring is loose. The carpet on the stairs to upstairs bedrooms is in bad shape. Most of the carpet was frayed. One of the steel rods holding the carpet was sticking up in air. The railing in upstairs hallway was very loose. Entry in back is perilous. Not welcoming at all. We did enjoy the history of the house.
From the first time we booked many months ago, and throughout our stay, the host was very responsive to our inquiries.
Overall, we were very happy with our experience. The view from the front of the house is INCREDIBLE! You can sit outside and watch the sunrise, listen to the birds, have coffee, etc. There is also a quaint little outside patio on the side of the house to move to if you get hot in the front of the house. There is a cute non-intrusive outdoor cat.
Plenty of space! MANY rooms to choose from to gather. 3 nice sized bedrooms (one bed is high). Having three full bathrooms was great!
We have a few things we'd suggest to improve the guest experience. Not all of the windows have coverings. People can't necessarily see inside, but if it is dark out, it would be nice to be able to close shades should you choose. There could be a few sensored plug-in night lights or lighted switches to light your path if you enter after dark to help you navigate unfamiliar surroundings. We could not get the TV to work, but I have no doubt that the host would have been very responsive if we had reached out. We appreciated the period-style home and furniture, but we would've liked one slightly more modern room in which to gather. Lastly, there is a learning curve and care needed to working the door locks and knobs. You need to push hard on some doors to get locks to engage.
The home was great! We would stay again! We appreciated the parking. Host was awesome and so was the view!
