Come to this family-friendly beach to enjoy long walks, explore rock pools, go swimming and watch sunsets from the terrace of a bar.
The golden sand, inviting water and picturesque backdrop of Galé Beach (Praia da Galé) is quintessential of the Algarve’s coastline. The beach is the eastern section of a stretch of uninterrupted coastline that runs for around 3 miles (5 kilometres) to the village of Armação de Pêra.
This pretty beach is split into two distinct areas. Galé Beach (East) is the easternmost and busier area, where you can rent umbrellas and sun loungers. Its curious rock formations are distinctive of the Algarve and great for snapping souvenir photos. Have fun walking through the tunnels and spotting fish in the natural rock pools, which appear when the tide goes out.
A selection of bars and restaurants line the road at the back of the beach. They fill up early in the evening with visitors eager to witness the remarkable sunset. You can also purchase drinks and ice creams from the vendors that patrol the beach.
Wander along the seashore to Galé Beach (West) and bask on a more secluded area. Here there’s nothing but you, the sand, dunes and ocean. The water is safe for swimming the entire length of the beach.
The beach is a 20-minute drive east of Albufeira. Free parking is available at the entrance to Galé Beach (East), although spaces are limited during the summer months. A public bus service operates between Albufeira and the Galé village.
There is a range of accommodation at Galé Beach. If you are feeling energetic, walk the full distance to Armação de Pêra via Salgados Beach. See the remains of the Fort of Armação de Pêra and join a guided boat tour to hidden caves and grottos. Allow about 1 hour for the walk.
