Take a holiday in Figueres, a town in north-east Catalonia close to the French border, and discover a fascinating culture and heritage.
You can begin by visiting the Plaça de l’Ajuntament, where you’ll find the town hall, which dates from 1757. You’ll soon realise it’s the perfect place for a drink with friends or to enjoy the local Catalan cuisine under the neoclassical arcades.
After a short stroll north from the Plaça de l’Ajuntament, you’ll find the Església de Sant Pere, a Romanesque-style church from the 10th century. Its impressive interior, a single vaulted nave, is home to the font where the great painter Salvador Dalí was baptised. On the right is the church’s portico which has three pointed arches and wrought iron railings, with the central one taking the form of a tree.

Opposite the church of Sant Pere, you will find the Dalí Theatre and Museum, built by the artist himself, where madness and genius go hand in hand.
Dalí used this workshop as a residence, where he worked during the last ten years of his life, and his body rests there to this day. In the outside, you’ll notice the loaves of bread that cover the façade, the mannequin figures that crown the building, the large transparent dome and the giant white eggs of the towering Torre Galatea.
On a hill to the north of the city you can see the largest monument in Catalonia, the Castell de Sant Ferran, an 18th century castle. The fortification can be reached after a pleasant walk up the trail, known as the “Pujada del Castell”. Once at the top, take a moment to rest and admire the breathtaking views of Figueres and the surrounding areas.
Getting to Figueres is really easy, as it is very well connected with other cities both by train and by road. Girona-Costa Brava airport is about 30 miles away, so that is also a good option.
