Entire house on a remote sheep farm , tended for 45 years

Day trips to the just established New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. No virus in these hills and hollows, too remote! Come and enjoy the a vacation worry-free!
Welcome to a quiet farm in the Appalachian Mountains. We have a 100 acre mountain farm with two creeks and miles long views in all directions. The only sounds are Pileated woodpeckers, lambs calling for their mothers and a very rare plane overhead. The sheep love attention and are happy to pretend to pose for photos.

The house is a two story three bedroom timber frame with solar and wood heat that can sleep ten adults or 16 total with children on mattresses on the floor.
The kitchen has a full complement of all necessary cooking resources, a gas stove and oven, (which is working fine contrary to a sour guest's 'warning'), two refrigerators and one freezer, spring water of the highest quality, so there is no need for bottled water.

Pocahontas County, a brilliant gem in these mountains, has many local resources, the Greenbrier River and its Trail, the Cranberry Wilderness Area, for hiking, fishing and cross country skiing, Snowshoe Ski Resort, the best skiing in the East south of New England and the Gauley River for white water rafting in the fall, also the best rafting east of the Mississippi.

Amazing!

This is a beautiful place to stay. The drive through back roads was well worth it. The host is very kind. We are already talking about our next family trip there!

Met all expectations

The house and property are amazing the craftsmanship of the house was outstanding. It was definitely lived in with many personal touches but we felt at home. Dan was very helpful in locating all the places we wanted to visit. The directions on how to find the house were spot on. The entire stay was an amazing experience. I would definitely recommend staying here and I hope to come back for another visit

The peace and quiet you crave

this place was out in the middle of nowhere but was amazing. It was so quiet you could hear your ears ringing. the sky was clear and beautiful we saw shooting stars, the milky way and just beautiful night sky. if your in to books this is a place to explore. the owner had to have thousands of books and they were all well organized. some of the books were published in the early 1900’s. the host was very friendly and I am assuming that he put a lot of love into building this home. The only drawbacks I had was that the beds were not very comfortable and the living room furniture is very worn. this place is really out by itself but was so peaceful and actually forced our family to communicate and spend quality time together. I would definitely recommend.

Wonderful getaway

Our families with toddlers enjoyed a stay at this farm in West Virginia. House has its personality, with a great view on the surrounding hills. The owner is a very hospitable person. Kids were happy to feed the sheep, jump in a hay, walk in the hills. Nearby it is interesting to visit Beartown state park, Lost Worlds caves.

Lovely grounds and a lovely stay

We stayed with our two little kids on this beautiful enchanting farm for a week and really enjoyed our time. It was exactly what we were looking for, a spot to disconnect for a bit, slow down, and to be in nature. We loved spending time getting to know Dan and the sheep as well! Would love to return again in the future!

What a beautiful property and home and interesting and kind owner. Read the conditions closely. This home is very off the grid. No TV and little internet. He is up front about that. It made for great conversations! If you are looking for a unique stay this is a great place!

Sheep heaven

Such a great experience. Everything we were looking for. Remote, quiet and still all the amenities we needed for 6 people ages 7 - 80! Everyone was impressed with Dan’s attentiveness and hospitality. Sitting on the porch in warm weather, and inside with equally great views of the sheep and surrounding hills. Walking on the property and feeding the sheep!! We will be back!!

a secret in the woods!

This is not your typical VRBO! This is an adventure in the woods. Quaint and rustic and charming with a wonderful host. If you need fancy linens and fancy kitchenware this is not for you. But if you like the magic of shade trees and the feel of comfortable and worn and breezes on the hill and the sound of sheep in the valley then this is a magical place is for you!

Beautiful!

This is a beautiful property! You can see many stars at night in the sky! The sheep are friendly! I thoroughly enjoyed sitting outside at the side of the house overlooking a pasture and up the mountain. A great place to get away! Daniel has very old items that he could open a museum with. The house was very homey and beautiful. I will say that you may think that you’re lost when you’re driving to the back of the hollow but never fear, you will find it! Thank you Daniel for your hospitality and welcoming us into your home!

Unique and Delightful Experience

This is a working sheep farm in a spectacular long north/south running valley framed by mountain ridges to the east and west. The house, with magnificent woodwork and attention to detail, was built by the owner over 40 years ago. The owner moves to a little cottage while you occupy his home. He is an eminently graceful host and knowledgeable about the many activities in the greater area. I was content to sitting on the porch absorbing the sights, sounds, and fresh air of true countryside.

Pictures don't do it justice

Dan's timber-framed home is spacious and comfortable, with fantastic views of the hillsides and mountains in every direction. Sit in the fragrant sunroom, sipping coffee and watch the sheep browsing their way across the hillside in the early morning sun. You're just a half hour drive from Cranberry wilderness and Monongahela national wilderness. Dan is kind and attentive and the farmhouse reflects his appreciation for craftsmanship.

Second Time at Dan’s Farm

This was my second time staying at Dan’s farm. Each time, I visited with a different group of 4-5 friends. If you are looking for a beautiful, remote, quiet trip, this sheep farm is an incredible option. Located in the mountains of West Virginia, the farm feels far from the outside world, but provides a great background for long walks, sleeping in, cooking, warm baths, board games, and reading. The land around the home is vast and free to explore — my friends interested in birdwatching especially enjoyed walks in the area. Otherwise, my favorite parts are the beautiful kitchen and dining area as well as the porch that look over the hills of the area. Dan is a more than hospitable host whose home provides so much comfort. This was my second visit here, but certainly not my last.

Peaceful remote farm place for family & friends gathering

Such a lovely place with lot of memory (host’s life) in every bit of the house. It will take you hours just to see everything in the house and trust me it will be like a rustic museum in a good way. We had a another tiny host ( Aiden the cat ) who also welcomed and stayed with us without any trouble. Dan helped us with everything and you ll realise how good he is once you meet him. We loved the sheep and when we went it was a winter wonderland and we were sledding in the slopes and having fun like kids. Just make sure you have a 4WD since the very last lane of the road is very steep and rugged. And you might want to download offline map since there will not be any service. And last but not the least please respect this place because this man has built a legacy of his life and we appreciate he is letting people to enjoy it a bit with these stays. Note: The water from kitchecn tap is amazing 😍 … we were hestitate at first and loved drinking it . I even filled a gallon of it in my bottle for travel back.

Great stay

It was a rare pleasure for our family to stay on Dan's farm. The house is a gem, informed in so many details by Dan's eye for the beautiful, and his warmth. Dan was a generous, kind host, opening his home to us fully as if to family members, and we delighted in getting to know him. The location is superb. Our daughter enjoyed meeting the sheep and feeding the ducks, my father-in-law enjoyed walks on the property. It rained much of the time we were there, but we were content to enjoy it from such a cozy, lovely vantage point. The internet worked well throughout our stay, allowing me to get needed work done. We brought food with us and cooked everything at home; to have done otherwise might have been cumbersome in the remote location, but we enjoyed the slow pace and home-cooked meals. We lacked for nothing. We certainly hope to be back. Thank you for the kale from the garden; it was delicious.

Authentic Experience

My family and I have stayed in many vacation homes with some missing the mark while others exceed it. This is a different experience—Dan opens his home, full of character and personality, to allow you a peek into a different way of life, complete with your own support from someone so accommodating and knowledgeable. Come for the escape from the façade of busyness, and take the time here to recognize the different world turning in these hills. Perhaps even leave with a friend in Dan and Sparky. The home had everything we needed. No televisions and limited cell phone access was a nice reprieve and encouraged us to explore the home’s impressive collection of books and take in much of the moments. Beds were comfortable and I feel a silly pride of self-sufficiency in tending to the wood fireplace to the extent that we did. Dan even made us feel “helpful” in our sheep involvement, though I’m fairly certain our participation was purely limited to fascination. Looking forward to future trips!

"Almost heaven..... West Virginia"

We were just looking for a get away for some peace and quiet, which we received at Pocahontas Sheep Farm. But, I received so much more! Amazing scenery, a perfect host, and the most incredible experiences of seeing Life begin - actually watching Dan assist a sheep in the lambing process. It was truly a life changing experience for me! I was more of a city girl growing up and had never seen an animal actually give birth. Nothing else compares to that experience for me, but the wonderfully built home and its furnishings (oriental rugs, gorgeous carpentry, beautiful wood floors) as well as Dan, the owner, made this entire trip one of the best ever. So I totally recommend a trip out in the country for anyone who wants to feel alive, wants to get re-connected to nature, wants to just get away from the city, and wants to restore one's soul. This is the place where it all happens. Absolutely magical ----- almost heaven, indeed.

What a wonder quiet and peaceful place to stay with your family and friend who love the outdoors.

Everything was as he states in the description. He does have a few simple house rules. To explain further his house is hand crafted with very nice wood counters. He lives on a sheep farm which is absolutely beautiful! These sheep live there and walk around the property in fenced in areas throughout the property and up to the house, meaning there is poop on the ground. For us it not an issue as we live farm land and animals. So his other rule is no shoes in the house to keep the floor from getting dirty. He is a wonderful guy and very informative of things to do in the area. He does stay on the property and works which was nice to be able to ask questions since there is not much service. It is a wonderful place to disconnect from the rest of the world and live in the mountains. You would wake up at 6 am to the mountain tops being covered with the clouds. We will be visiting again!

Beautiful secluded corner of the world!

My boyfriend and I came to stay at Dans little corner of the world for a weekend getaway to disconnect from our busy and demanding lives. We were able to do just that! We were completely secluded with beautiful scenery, natures sounds, and Dans absolutely beautiful custom built home. We are so grateful he has decided to open his home and share a piece of it with others so that they too can enjoy the beauty and peace. Dan was available on the property the whole time and very kind, even offering us to pick kale and lettuce from his personal garden to enjoy! While he was there on the property, his presence wasn’t an issue and his hospitality is unmatched! If you’re looking to truly disconnect I highly recommend Dans place, while there is internet available, we chose to not utilize it and really just enjoy. There were MANY deer and beautiful birds all day everyday on the property which we enjoyed. The only thing I would change is having a lock on the door in the dining room (not that it’s necessarily needed due to seclusion), those not accustomed to staying out in a secluded area may feel more at ease being able to lock up during sleeping hours. Other than just the “peace of mind” with locks, it was a dream and very accommodating. Thanks again for opening your home to us and your superior hospitality, we needed the trip more than we knew!

It is a sheep farm!

I think I had higher expectations from staying at other very nice VRBO places. It was, however, shown as a sheep farm in the hills of West Virginia and that's what it was. A few things the owner should have noted to us was that the road to the farm was long, rural and rough. You do need a 4 wheel drive. We should have been told that a cat lived in the house with us (Allergies). The kitchen did not have a coffee maker, microwave or a toaster and the flatware, plates and utensils were not adequate at all. Owner should remove all the knick-nacks around as we were worried about breaking them. One bathroom did not have a shower. Internet was not the best and we were asked not to watch our usage. No shoes allowed in the house either. The view from the house was spectacular and it was very quiet and peacefull. Owner was kind and helpful.

Wonderful!!

Thank you, Dan, for an "almost heaven" West Virginia experience! We have stayed at many VRBOs, airBnBs, and farm stays and Dan's property ranks among the top. The sheep, the stars, the landscape, the incredible Dan-built home, Aiden the Cat, the peaceful quiet... it was tough to leave. A truly memorable, home-like stay, like visiting a family member. Some tips for future guests: ~ follow Dan's advice and follow his directions, not GPS. best to print or take a pic of the directions, because you will lose reception once you're off the main roads. "turn left at 'pigs 4 sale'":) ~ the lovely country roads to his property can be daunting the first time through - we rec trying to arrive during daylight hours. Turkey Trail might not seem drivable the first time you see it, but it is! We managed with a minivan just fine. ~ wifi was strong enough in the house for basic web searching, but not for streaming. download any movies/shows you might want before arriving. ~ Greenbank Observatory was a beautiful drive and VERY cool. We also had a ball rafting New River with West Virginia Adventures. Lost Caverns was a hit with the kids, lots of "whoas!" If you're on the fence - book it! You'll be so happy you did!

Take The Road Less Traveled!

I was on my way back from Florida and wanted to take break and stop somewhere different. I looked around and found this amazing place and home. So special! This review is a tad long, but for anyone who has looked at this listing and has been hesitant to maybe step outside the box.....I wanted to be detailed enough to put your mind at ease. I can say with 100% honesty that I am SO GLAD I stayed at Dan’s absolutely breathtaking house on his sheep farm. Dan was incredibly helpful with things to do, the area and of course, HIS SHEEP! We fed them together, I named one, and just enjoyed watching them do their thing around the pastures. The lambs were so adorable! Dan stays overnight in a separate home down below the guest house. He does come up to the house (which is where he lives when no guests) during the day, and goes out of his way to make sure you have everything you need. The house is big and very cozy with a wood burning stove for heat that Dan takes care of for his guests, and has an incredibly large library of books of any topic. The house is well-loved, and holds a lot of interesting things. There are 2 bathrooms but only 1 shower. The other bathroom is for tub-baths only. The house was absolutely sparkling clean, the floors, windows and the bathrooms. The beds are quite comfy, and the views are just so beautiful. If your stay includes a rainy forecast, bring boots/shoes that can get muddy, and that you can leave on the porch as you come and go. This trip renewed our faith that there is still so much countryside, adventure, nature and peacefulness very close by. It is rustic..... in so many good ways, so don’t be hesitant to give it a try. And don’t hesitant to ask Dan for anything you might need.

Uniquely awesome, BUT....

I will start by saying the location and setting are absolutely gorgeous. The craftsmanship of the house is superb. The collections through out the house were eerily similar to my own. The stars are crystal clear (we even saw a few shooting stars) The owner (Dan) was nice... However, there were many quirks I would want a future renter to know about. There is no landline phone service. There is also no cellular phone service. We started out with internet service but then Dan took the Hot Spot into town to get it “trouble shooted” (with permission). The Hot Spot was returned later that evening. On the fourth morning (8am), Dan entered the house and took the Hot Spot box without an explanation or having returned it. He left us without any way to contact anyone. My asthmatic son and 2 of my family members were experiencing dust allergy symptoms every evening due to the dust through out the house, so I felt uneasy knowing if there was an emergency I couldn’t call or even look up on my phone for the closest hospital. Another issue with the internet is that my BIL had remote work priorities, decided to stay home, but after talking with Dan when we arrived he said my BIL would have working internet, my BIL made the trip to WV alone, but when he arrived we clearly did not have internet, which made working remote impossible... On the third day, while we were out enjoying the sights, we noticed that Dan had been in the house and took a blanket my son was using to keep warm at night, again without any explanation. In previous rentals the property owner respects our privacy and only enters the house with permission (as if it is our own house). To be clear there are no locks on any of the doors... The oven was problematic the whole stay but failed to work entirely on the fourth night, so I would suggest if you were staying, to pack meals that do not require the use of an oven... I would say that there are 2 king size beds and a full size bed. The other mattress pads, including the one in the library room, were very old, visually stained and dusty (not good for anyone with dust allergies)... We went into reserving this property knowing it would be a unique experience. We are very laid back, easy going people, however like I stated before there were quite a few quirks that need to be addressed. With a professional deep house cleaning service, continuous reliable internet, privacy, and a few upgrades, this property would be a more enjoyable stay.

Beautiful location and farm

It was a beautiful farm off grid. Overall Daniel was great communicating the expectations and check in. The house was rustic and charming; but could use a deep cleaning.and ventilation. We went end of June and the house was very hot by the end of the day. So it was dusty and stuffy. The tiny desk fans were not enough to cool us down. But then again this a farm and creature comforts are not the highlight. All that said the picturesque window , swallows, lightning bugs and sheep were beautiful to wake up to. Aidan the house cat was very friendly. Beartown boardwalk and cranberry glades are 25 and 45 minutes away and beautiful walks on the boardwalk and the falls hills creek hike.
