Just 3 miles away, the Santa Margarita River Trail Preserve — ranked the #1 trail in San Diego County — winds along one of the last free-flowing wild rivers in the region and is home to golden beavers, steelhead trout, and diverse plant life. Would highly recommend for anyone looking to go camping without all the extra work of setting up and tearing down camp. Plenty of room to store belongings, and bed was a nice change instead of using pads and sleeping bags. Cooked our meals over the fire with provided fire pit grill. I should have known as soon as the signage was out of date driving in to find a path towards Rock Bottom that this would only be the beginning of an eventful night. Be wary of having a vehicle with clearance any smaller of an SUV as my stock Honda Civic was just barely able to handle the dirt roads in this campsite. (a tip not stated once in their many descriptions) to the, bottoming out at every turn and nearly stranding us there if not for some makeshift DIY roadwork.Be wary of the open floorboards with just a thin sheet of mesh that allows all of the insects on Gods green earth to also share in the experience with you - even creating their own biodome habitat. The gnats, ants, beetles, roaches and praying mantis were solicitors that could haven be handled/tolerated.. but the sheer amount of brown recluse who made the bed their hunting ground was just too much.
