My family and I had an absolute blast! We stayed for 4 nights. The cabin is quaint and cozy and the electricity is also nice for modern conveniences when you have kids. We had one cold rainy day so it was nice to head in and explore Ely and went to the Bear Museum.
We had an excellent time. Perfect setup for a family of 4. Just a short ride to town and Grand Ely Lodge made it a perfect balance of seclusion, while still being able to enjoy a dinner out.
We will be back!
The cabin is situated with no other cabins in view. Beautifully decorated Minnesota Cabin thats extremely functional. The boat was perfect for this lake even with high winds you can easily get around. The wildlife on the island made the trip. We cant wait to come back.

So peaceful. The cabin was perfect had everything we needed. Listening to the loons everyday made my summer complete. Getting to and from the island is very easy we ate at the lodge food was very good . Had my first old fashioned. The staff at the lodge were very helpful and friendly. We hopefully can get back someday.
Very nice cabin and super location. Got lucky with the Northern lights and beautiful weather. Bed is comphy.
It's as described with being "off grid" but it certainly isn't roughing it. Its luxury camping for sure. Kitchen is well equipped and we did most meals over a week on site.
Lake had significant algae while we were there. Miners lake close by was great for a dip.
The property is exactly as described. We were looking for a boundary waters "light" experience as we are getting a little older and struggle with the full wilderness adventure. This cabin fit the bill perfectly.
We enjoyed how fully stocked and appropriated the cabin was for being off the grid. We were able to cook numerous delicious meals. There was plenty of water, TP, paper towels, bedding and towels.
We used the provided boat daily as we went fishing and into Ely for a fun day. We hooked up the trolling motor to help maneuver the boat while fishing.
Overall, it was a very relaxing week on Loon Island. If you are looking for an off the grid experience, this place is for you. But you can still turn on the lights for a while and make some toast!
My husband and I booked over Labor Day weekend through the week. The cabin and little island were just perfect! I love the way Neil has carved out little areas to capture all the beauty surrounding you in Shagawa. The hammock area for reading or napping! The sunset sitting spot (perfect to share some wine and star gaze)! The fire pit area to host a small gathering of family to toast marshmallows and eat chili!! Perfection! The cabin is well appointed and cozy. We were very comfortable thru some wild weather and temperature swings! The provided boat allowed us easy access to Ely and all the fun there too! Couldn’t be more pleased! Also, caretakers Rob and Lee were friendly, responsive to questions and super helpful. FIVE sparkly stars!! Thank you!!
Very nice cabin. Clean and well kept. Having the John boat and canoe were a nice bonus seeing we were on an island. Lol. Host was very responsive and Rob was too. While we were there it got cold, so we needed to use the gas burner cast iron heating unit. Couldn’t get it lit and they were very helpful on that. Reading the instructions became helpful. Another knee slapper. Push in the knob while igniting with the pilot button. The instructions were on the floor attached to the legs. Hard to read, so maybe put those instructions in the great information binder that was there. Unfortunately for us, the four days we were there it got cold, windy, and rainy. Just kept coming at us. Late in the season I guess. We thought to use the john-boat with trawling motor and regular motor to fish and go into Ely, but with water and rain, we hunkered down. Great overall experience.
Great place! My friends and I have been coming here from Chicago for the 3rd time. We were there in 2023, 2024 and now! Always cozy, clean and wonderful hosts!
Great VRBO experience at Loon Island on Shagawa. The cabin was as described and well maintained. It had everything we needed for our stay and then some. Rob the caretaker did a great job of setting us up and giving us the necessary information for our stay. It was a perfect distance from Grand Ely Lodge to make it feel like you were out in the wilderness but if you wanted to check out town it was just a few minutes away. Ely is one of favorite towns, and being able to enjoy the town and also get away in the evenings was quite enjoyable. Fishing was solid as well. Caught a little bit of everything and everything we caught was of average or above average size. Thank you Neil for sharing Loon Island with the rest of us. And thank you Rob for setting us up and showing us around. Can't wait to get back up and check out Shagawa soon.
Just the right amount of adventure for us. The property was awesome. Of course we had great weather but was a fantastic trip for us. The house was in great shape and had all the amenities we needed. Thanks to Dave for all his help!
Great vacation with great fishing in the boundary waters (we had 3 amazing fishing days with Mike Stark with Ely fishing co). Only thing that could be a touch better would be a slightly bigger motor boat (was a bit small when all 4 of us were in it). Great host
We had an amazing time staying at the cabin on Loon Island. The cabin is beautiful, and is in fantastic condition. It has a full kitchen with all the pots, pans, plates, utensils, etc. you will need for cooking. The solar powered lights work extremely well, and we never had an issue using lights at night and charging devices during the day/night. Showering is simple using the collected rain water in the barrels outside and a battery powered shower head.Having the boat is awesome, and works very well for fishing and simply exploring the lake. It's a small motor so you won't be zipping around the lake, but it serves its purpose very well. We also enjoyed using the paddle boat and canoe.Outside the cabin there is also a firepit with a grill attachment that we loved to use, a charcoal grill, and a gas grill. There are a couple different places to hangout and have great views of the sunset as well. It is incredibly peaceful listening to the loons as the sun goes down.We had no issues organizing our stay with Neil and the caretaker Rob, and it was very easy checking in and out.Overall, our stay was wonderful. It exceeded our expectations, and we will definitely be back.
My husband and I recently got married and wanted a few days to relax, have little human contact, and spend some time outdoors. And this property absolutely delivered.
Dave, the caretaker, was super easy to contact and always answered quickly whenever we reached out with questions before our stay. He helped load and unload all of our things as well, which was unnecessary but much appreciated.
There was plenty of water provided for our 3 night stay. And even though it was cloudy, we had no issues with using the solar power to charge phones and to have the lights on for a few hours at night. The linens were clean, and the property was well kept.
Our only complaint is that the fishing was better around the lake, but we heard everyone was having a hard time so we just enjoyed dinner at the Grand Ely Lodge one night instead of fish.
If you’re looking for a place to disconnect, drink coffee in nature (while being close to civilization) and relax. Then this is your place. Definitely going to come back someday.
Everything was wonderful again this trip. Dave who picks you up is a great guy and willing to answer any questions and help out however he can.
The cabin is outfitted with everything you need and the boat is perfect for the lake.
Thanks again! And we’ll be back for sure.
We really enjoyed our time on Loon Island. The cabin was spectacular as was the quality of our stay. We enjoyed fishing with the provided motorboat and enjoyed a few walleye dinners. We left feeling restored and reset. Thank you!
Such gracious hosts! Thank you for the celebratory treats upon arrival 😊 So thoughtful and lovely. My husband and I loved getting to experience island living and off-grid simple living. Looking forward to our next stay! Thank you thank you!
Just had the most amazing week in Ely! We came for a Daddy Daughter Wilderness trip and wanted to have an experience that was unique yet comfortable for us. Our stay on Loon Island checked all the boxes and more. Prior to the trip our amazing hosts Neil and Dave, the caretaker, were attentive and exceptionally informative which took so much stress out of planning. They really thought of everything! The cabin is such a gem, what sold me was the comfort of a building but the remoteness of being on the island (although we were only a short 10 minute boat ride from shore). The accommodations were top notch and we slept better than we have in at least weeks! Despite the lack of running water (being on an island of course) Dave and Neil provided everything we needed for drinking, doing dishes and even taking a pretty good shower! We were able to cook most of our meals over the campfire and made some meals inside on the stove as well.
The island was a little paradise, we were there early enough in the season to miss the bugs and the crowds and we enjoyed watching all of the birds on the island. And of course, hearing the loons at night!
Overall, we had a fun and truly magical week of memories and a big part of that was our stay on Loon Island. I cannot recommend this place enough or the hospitality and knowledge of Neil and Dave. Next time we're up in Ely (which I hope is soon) we're definitely staying at Loon Island again!
