Pocket Guide: Elmina

Welcome to Elmina

From the 15th century until its independence in 1957, Ghana endured European colonialism, trade – including slavery – and competition over resources. There are few places in the country where you can better understand this history than in Elmina, which combines fascinating historical sites with inviting beach resorts and plenty of places to sample the culinary highlights of the region, many including fish you can watch being landed on the beach by the local fishermen.

Hundreds of Years of History in Elmina

Elmina Castle was built in 1482 which makes it the oldest European building on the African continent and the oldest slave fort on the coast. A visit to Elmina Castle is a must, and you can join a guided tour to help you better understand its history. Elmina Castle is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as is Fort Conraadsburg, built to attack the Elmina Castle but later used to defend it before being transformed into a prison.

Be sure also to see the Dutch Cemetery and the former Portuguese Church, which is now a museum documenting the history of the slave trade. The Elmina Java Museum is also an important stop to learn about the soldiers from the region who were enlisted in the Royal Netherlands army. As well as specific tours of each of these historical sites, you can organise a walking tour of Elmina as a whole, taking in all the stories of the town as well as its contemporary attractions.

Explore Elmina and Central’s Attractions

After you’ve learnt about the area’s history, head to Elmina’s beaches. Book into one of Elmina’s beach resorts for good restaurants and other on-site facilities. The Brenu beaches are 15 minutes by taxi from the town, and Cape Coast with its castle and beaches is seven miles away. The town of Mankessim is home to a colourful and elaborate Posuban Shrine, and has a large market that is well worth checking out.

Inland from Elmina is one of the highlights of the region, the Kakum National Park. Predominantly rainforest, the park has long been a nature reserve and is home to a wealth of animals, birds and plant life. See if you can spot the elephants, buffalo, monkeys and river hogs. Or head up into the trees for a canopy walk some 130 feet above the forest floor for a dramatic way to see the park.
