The Redbud Cottage--beach & Quiet. Lake Sara Waterfront & Wood Fires

Lakefront Cottage with kitchen and patio
Located in the heart of central Illinois, the Redbud Cottage at Lake Sara is a great destination for families or friends, or a perfect stopover for a trip through the Great Midwest. With your own swimming beach, a floating dock to play on, a beautiful wood-burning fireplace, a dock for fishing, and a large deck for sitting in the sun, enjoy the peace and quiet of our little wooded cottage on the lake. Our beach is SHARED by the Hartmann's grandchildren a few days each Summer. But our grandchildren are still young, will be supervised by adults, and won't use the beach while guests are using the beach or the dock (for example while fishing). Every season is beautiful on Lake Sara, with Spring and Fall being particularly pretty and quiet. The Summer water is wonderful for swimming, and warm from May through September. Enjoy eating on our old family picnic table by the water. Watch the kids swim or play on the beach, or have fun taking a lovely float yourself in Lake Sara's clean, warm water. Wake boarding, tubing, and water skiing are local favorites. There is good fishing for bass, crappie, catfish, and blue gill, especially in the Spring and Fall. Lake Sara sets aside special quiet hours for fishermen. Winter is a great time for crisp woodsy walks and warming fires. Our 3 bedroom, 2 bath cottage sleeps up to 7 in our 3 king size beds and a couple of wonderful wide sleeping couches in front of the fireplace. We have a nice kitchen with a Keurig Coffemaker, a French coffee press, a dishwasher, and all new dishes and pots and pans. Our washer and dryer and two-car garage make this a perfect spot for an extended stay. A canoe and a kayak available for the use of our guests. Inside, enjoy the separation of a master suite upstairs, as well as the two-and-a-half story, book-filled living room with its massive stone fireplace. You can burn local wood that you'll find stacked at your door. One of our favorite sports is sitting with a book in front of the fire--wine and s'mores are optional. Our lot is full of tall, beautiful oaks and maples, and is in a pretty neighborhood on the quiet western end of Lake Sara. Redbud trees line Lorton road and are being planted among our woods, bringing their vivid purple/pink flowers in Spring. Views from our huge deck are all water and trees--you can only see one other house. The Lake is surrounded by good Illinois farmland, so it's a wonderful spot for long flat bike rides and walks.
Air-conditioned accommodation at this cottage offers fireplaces and DVD players. Rooms open to patios. Kitchens offer fridges, hobs, microwaves and separate dining areas.

Bathrooms include a combined bath/shower unit and hairdryers. Additionally, rooms include coffee/tea makers and an iron/ironing board.

The recreational activities listed below are available either on-site or nearby; fees may apply.

5/5 Excellent

Amazing fireplace
The host, David, was the best! He answered all our questions quickly and thoroughly. He also went above and beyond by helping make a special day even more so. The cottage was very clean, alleviating COVID concerns. The fireplace is amazing! We enjoyed great fires every day. The garage was certainly a plus, since we arrived when it was sleeting. The beds are very comfortable, although I needed a little step stool to get in and out!

5/5 Excellent

Rea and Tam in Effingham
We had a very pleasant stay. We enjoyed the peace and quiet, a pretty hike and we even kayaked. The firewood was great to be able to have fires at night and the beds were very comfortable! We can’t wait to go back!

5/5 Excellent

Amazing place as described in the listing
House is fully equipped with all the fun as described. Place looks amazing and we are going to come back in summer for sure.

5/5 Excellent

Cozy with a beautiful view.
We will go back for the lake but enjoyed our cozy winter stay with the great fireplace. Communication was excellent and we had no problems whatsoever.

4/5 Good

Great location - room for improvement
We visited in December. The location on the water is outstanding. The bedrooms and beds are good. The communication and hospitality of the hosts are top-notch. The beautiful fireplace causes the entire house to reek of smoke - not a huge deal because it's like a cabin, but what it means is that your belongings absolutely reek of smoke if you have a fire. We stopped using it after 2 days because of this, which was a bummer. But, they had tons of free firewood, which is pretty cool. The condition of the common areas of the house also left a lot to be desired. Microwave sucked, floors were in bad shape, many of the pots and pans were so scratched the non-stick coating is peeling very badly and there weren't a lot of usable options for our family of 5 who cook every meal. Also, because of all of the decor on shelving, I would not recommend for children under 5. We were also concerned about the kitchen table and chairs because they weren't all that sturdy. The lighting in the kitchen also has CFLs or led, but the switch is analog, which means the lights in there constantly flicker. Also, you're right next door to the owners and there are no window coverings in the common areas, so we felt as if we had no privacy, except to sleep. The property could be a jewel if the owners spent some money and time to address some of the issues. Again, though, the setting is beautiful and the owners were great. Without that and the good bedrooms, I would rank this a 3 star property with a great location.
