Duluth Press Building History: 1915 W. Superior St. aka The Duluth Press Building was built by architects Radcliffe & Willoughby in the year 1894. Extant Missouri native Hugh Wetmore spent much of the 1880s working as a reporter for the St. Paul dispatch before moving to Superior in 1890 to write for the Superior Evening Telegram. The next year he established a newspaper in Duluth's west end called The Union Workman: The People Press. According to Duluth journalist Paul Lundgren the paper was the official organ of The Duluth Trades and Labor Assembly. The following year Wetmore began courting Helen Cody, sister of "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Hugh and Helen wed in July 1893, the same month Helen took over as the paper's business manager. That September the paper's name was changed to The Duluth Press. By then Buffalo Bill Cody owned half of the business and financed the construction of a building to house it along the upper 1900 block of west superior street. After the building opened in 1894 Helen hired her daughter Mary Jester as its city editor and organized the Zenith Press Club, consisting solely of women. The next year she advertised the publication as "The Women's Paper of the Great Northwest." The periodical didn't last long, they published their final issue on August 29, 1896\. To access the parking lot, turn into the alley off of either 19th or 20th street and look for the designated parking area with signs for the Duluth Press Building. They even has Bounty paper towels instead of cheap no name brands that don't work. This minor detail shows that they appreciate their guests. The kitchen was well stocked also providing dishwasher soap and laundry pods. The assigned parking space right outside the back door was awesome. And the restaurant next door and their other recommendations were amazing.Only negative we found was in the 2nd bedroom and bath you could hear the people upstairs. A few shops to check out. Great eating and brewery options. Lovely accommodations. Clean, modern and comfortable. Not sure if you would be bothered by upstair guests if they were directly above, but we didn’t hear much from two other upstair apartments that were occupied the same nights. We really appreciated the location and things to do downtown. We wanted to try OMC which is right next door and if you show them your reservation, you get bumped to the front of the wait list. What would have been an hour wait turned into about 5 minutes. That was really cool! We had our own parking spot in back which was nice to not have to look for parking. The view from our livingroom to the downtown was really pretty. Cant wait to come back! ##### Aubrie S. I knew we were in a good spot, but I didn’t realize we were right on top of OMC. This was the perfect location - Only a few blocks to the Wild State Cider (my favorite) and Duluth Grill (always amazing), and 190 coffee is right across the street. Parking was easy, the place itself was great for two couples, and you have the best windows people watching. We will definitely be staying here again in the future. ##### Jessica R. Would definitely go back. There were quite a few shops in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. The only downside is not being by the lake and close to down town and Canal Park, but we knew that when we booked the property. It was very, very clean and they had a nice gift bag and coupons for neighborhood businesses. Overall, a great place to stay. We had two tweens with us and they said “they wanted to live there”. 😋 ##### Nicole T.
