Good position in middle of town,easy to get to buses/trains etc. Fusty smell in entrance when you first arrive. Staff on reception very helpful and friendly. We stayed in double room 330,it was very poky and tired looking and very dreary. One window facing a building.No bedside table,no hairdryer but bag for one. Staff fetched one when asked very quickly. Only one bath towel but supplied three when asked. We stayed for two nights,no housekeeping on second day,no milk replenished,tea etc. I thought this was a given? We were kept awake for three and half hours from one am to 4-30 am by guests in room next to ours shouting,singing very loudly. Not hotels fault but soundproofing must be bad,we could hear every word they were saying. We paid £252 for two nights Friday and Saturday. A positive the bed was very comfortable and bedding seemed clean. Did not investigate further. Room clean but furniture dated and basic,we had one small wardrobe and a small desk and bed in room with a chair. I have stayed here in the past many years ago and enjoyed it,rooms were a lot better then,I do not think I would stay again unless complete refurb. I expected more for the price. Given all issues a big let down. I thought Mercure was good standard of hotel?

Check in takes a ridiculously long time (over 25mins for 3 people), ask for ID unnecessarily, room was not cleaned to a decent standard, stagnant water left in kettle and coffee machine and someone’s clothes left in wardrobe. Bathroom was covered in paint and grout from some recent work and everything looked a bodge job from shower to toilet flush and taps. Only redeeming feature was size of room and bed was comfortable. Be aware bar opposite plays very loud music from early evening through to early hours.

Clean enough room - staff were non-communicable and unwelcoming - room cold - hot breakfast cold - even the shops nearby were uninspiring - novel rubber watch strap key which could easily fall out of your pocket Last year I came here and it was wonderful - now taken over by people who want to line their pockets without serving the people who have the misfortune to stay here - I could say a lot more but you’d probably have me arrested for racism Never staying here again
