The best area to stay in Dartmoor is generally near the coast, particularly around the towns of Napier and Hastings, as Dartmoor itself is a rural locality without extensive accommodation options. For those looking for a sophisticated base with a unique architectural style, Napier is an excellent choice. Known as the Art Deco Capital, its city centre, particularly along Marine Parade and Emerson Street, is filled with beautifully preserved 1930s buildings. You'll find a good selection of quality hotels, boutique shops, and restaurants here, many with views of Hawke Bay. Couples often appreciate Napier for its elegant ambiance, waterfront promenades, and the ease of accessing local wineries and the National Aquarium of New Zealand.Hastings, just a 20-minute drive inland from Napier, offers a slightly different appeal. Its city centre, particularly around Heretaunga Street, has a more relaxed, agricultural market town feel, with a growing number of eateries and artisan shops. Hastings is a great option for those who want to be closer to the region's orchards and vineyards, offering a more direct experience of the agricultural heartland.

Dartmoor, located in the Hawke's Bay Region of New Zealand, is best visited during the summer months, from December to February, or the shoulder seasons of spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May).Summer in Dartmoor offers the warmest and driest weather, with average temperatures in the low to mid-20s Celsius. This is ideal for enjoying the outdoor activities the region is known for, such as cycling the Hawke's Bay Trails or exploring the local vineyards. The longer daylight hours also allow for more extensive sightseeing. For those who prefer slightly cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, the shoulder seasons are an excellent choice. Spring brings blooming orchards and vineyards, while autumn showcases stunning autumnal colours, particularly in the rural landscapes surrounding Dartmoor. The weather remains pleasant, typically in the high teens or low 20s Celsius, great for wine tours and leisurely drives. While winter (June to August) brings cooler temperatures and more rainfall, it can still be a good time to visit for those interested in cosy indoor experiences, such as cellar door tastings or exploring art galleries in nearby Napier or Hastings.
