The House The earliest construction of the Porter Springs Farmhouse pre-dates the Civil War & has been continuously owned by the same family. It was part of the Queen of the Mountains hotel & resort, situated just a short distance from the Farmhouse & was located in what was known as the community of Porter Springs. Queen of the Mountains, referred to by family as “The Old Hotel,” was a summer get-away for many people in Atlanta because of the cooler weather & the legendary benefits of the springs on the property. Dinner was enjoyed with orchestral music & there was a bowling alley & other entertainments. Cold outdoor showers were the norm because running water was not available. Travel from Atlanta was usually a two-day journey by coach, with a stop in Gainesville.
It’s believed that Porter Springs Farmhouse began as a caretaker’s or hunter’s cabin. The house was given to my great uncle by my great-great grandfather, Colonel Henry Patillo Farrow, the owner of the Old Hotel. The original house constitutes the oldest part of the Farmhouse & includes the living room & two bedrooms, all having painted surfaces. The “newer” part of the house is the log portion. Construction began in 1909 when my great-uncle learned that his future bride’s dream was to live in a log house. The wood used to build the Farmhouse consists of some American Chestnut, which grew prolifically around the house until the blight in the early 1940’s. The house was added onto over the years with whatever wood was available on the surrounding land.
Throughout the generations, the Farmhouse has been a gathering place for young & old alike. Games were a beloved past time, family gatherings were common & practical jokes abounded. Frog gigging at night, making corncob pipes for rabbit tobacco, visiting Trahlyta’s grave (Stonepile Gap) in the dark to see if she’d speak to visitors, hiking Blood Mountain & telling ghost stories were some of the favorite memories of the older generation.
Because the house is so old, we have unwelcome visitors from time to time & you might see a mouse. However, we have made them feel so unwelcome in recent years that it’s a rare occurrence. There is also the dust factor. Try as we might to clean the house, it just sheds dirt & dust. Therefore, a visit to Porter Springs Farmhouse isn’t for everyone but the person who appreciates history & can imagine camping indoors with the comforts of heat, air conditioning, internet, dishwasher, big-screen tv, home office & oven/stove.
Explorations Around the house, you’ll see some evidence of the Old Hotel. Some fun explorations include spending some time with the green benches on the front porch where late 1800’s visitors to the Old Hotel carved their names into the benches. Try googling them & see what you can learn! Also on the porch are lights on both sides of the front door that are taken from old stagecoaches. Try writing a story about what it would be like to ride in a stagecoach! Inside the house, the dining room furniture is original to the house & the dining room table is from the Old Hotel.
Because rodents were always a problem in the past (sometimes in the present!), the kitchen cabinets are protected by hooks on the interior & wooden locks on the exterior. Similar locks were employed on bathroom, bedroom & exterior doors. The windows are “locked” with wooden locks & a nail. Feel free to explore the house & all of the interesting ways in which every day life was lived.
Sites &Sounds Many different animals have been raised over the years at the Farmhouse including chickens, goats & most recently, Angus cattle. Today, neighbors raise Angus cattle & they surround the Farmhouse. Grazing on private property, they come close enough to the house to hear them chewing the grass, snorting & calling out to their young. Because bulls are also present, wandering the pasture or going down to the creeks is absolutely forbidden. Dogs must be leashed when they go outside so they don’t risk running into the pasture & getting injured or spooking the cattle.
There are many other animals around the house. We have seen bears, deer, turkeys & hear the calls of many birds, including owls. Our favorite place to sit & enjoy the wildlife is the front porch where there is a frequent breeze - even on the hottest days.
Please note: This is an old cabin that has been updated. It still has a lot of old cabin quirks & features. The fireplaces are not functional! They were kept for their historical value.

Such a charming cabin! Beautiful property with plenty of amenities. Very comfortable beds and lovely linens. We stayed between Christmas and new years and the decorations were so festive! Joni was responsive and helpful. We would absolutely stay here again!
We loved the rustic cabin. The sleeping, dining and parking were first class. Everything was as advertised so we all had a wonderful stay. The only suggestion is to add additional lighting in the kitchen area. Also adding a power strip in the bedrooms would be nice as the existing outlets are difficult to access. These did not diminish our enjoyment of our stay,
It’s a very nice place to relax and enjoy, beds were comfortable, lots of shade, favorite place was the back porch. In between two vacationer’s dream towns. Nice little corner restaurant and store about a mile away. Just perfect with nature.
The house and property is beautiful as well as the entire city. Its super close to walmart of you need anything. It is also decently secluded so you can enjoy your time in peace.
This cabin was like staying in a museum! The decor is absolutely perfect for a farm house. Tons of antiques and character. The location was perfect for the right amount of getaway but still close to town.
Great Place to experience pre 1900s living. My daughter-in-law brought a Meter that measures energy (Ghosts) it pretty much Lit up in every room. Not surprising as old as the house is. Though it raised an eye brow. And if they were real they were friendly. No midnight encounters. The outdoor gazebo BBQ pit was awesome. The overall look of the place reminded me of the Ponderosa ranch house on Banana. So 5 star review from me
Great, relaxing and very unique place to stay. The cabin allows you to stay in a piece of history. Owner's have done a good job with updated amenities without taking away from pioneer feel. Very well furnished with everything you need.
The property was just what we needed to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and celebrate our friend’s birthday. The property was clean
On a last minute trip to the North Georgia mountains we found this quirky wonderful log cabin. We found it to be very comfortable, clean and spacious. Loved all the beautiful antiques! Our host Jodi was quick to answer any questions prior to our arrival, we would definitely come back.
We had a wonderful time at this historic cabin. There was plenty of space for five adults and two small children to spread out and enjoy our time together. The house the conveniently located to nearby attractions, but still keeps the tucked away cabin-in-the-woods feeling. The house was well equipped with basics and the owners were quick to respond when we had questions. Overall, a fantastic stay!
Rustic but great log cabin in the woods. Large property. Google the address and not what links on the booking site. Great kitchen large dining table expansive back screened porch. I brought a truck and electric car both were fine on the gravel driveway. We will return for a getaway in the mountains.
I rented this cabin as a quiet place to work on some artwork for Christmas. Everything was as expected. It was just me and my Maltese, and we enjoyed the spacious, quiet cabin. The pre-civil war history is interesting, too. I would return with a large group or family.
I booked this cabin for myself, my husband, our two kids, our friends and their child for a baseball tournament our sons played in. The cabin was much bigger than I expected, there was plenty of room for all of us. The kids enjoyed catching lightning bugs while the adults hung out on the screened in porch. Overall, it was a very nice stay and we would book again!
9 miles from Dahlonega, in a quiet little neck of the woods, sits a pre-civil war cabin that will take you back in time.
If you're looking for peace and quiet this is the place to stay. We absolutely loved it.
Whether it was playing Monopoly with the grandkids or sitting at the patio table in the sun watching the cows eat the grass. It was peaceful.
The cabin has all the amenities you need. If your looking for a spotless home, remember, this cabin was built back in the 1800's.
It was nice to walk in and see the Christmas decorations! We would stay there again.
My husband and I spent a wonderful Labor Day weekend at the property, accompanied by our two dogs. The cabin is masterfully mixing the very well-kept rustic origins and modern conveniences. Although it is close to the road, it feels very secluded and is very quiet. We loved to have our morning coffee on the screened porch while listening to the chirping birds. With the short drives to the Dahlonega downtown and local wineries, we had a great time and highly recommend this place for anybody who is looking for a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the modern city live.
Overall the cabin was exactly as advertised. We had a few hiccups upon check-in. The cleaning crew left all the dirty dishes in the sink that we had to wash. The power had gone out and we had to turn the breakers back on because the repair company didn’t. The owner apologized for the multiple inconveniences, but did not offer any sort of reimbursement or partial credit for the trouble. I would have at least offer a gift card for a dinner out on them. We did love the location The swing and the porch were amazing and the historical furnishings were wonderful. Would stay again! and the
We really enjoyed our 4 night stay. The place is MUCH bigger than we anticipated. It's so quiet and cozy inside and it's exceptionally well stocked. EVERYTHING you need to enjoy your stay is there. The screened in porch is a wonderful place to enjoy mornings or evenings. The property is beautiful as well.
The only draw back was the large bathroom claw foot tub/shower combo. It's not super convenient to use (no shelving inside for your soap and hair products) and you have to be very careful with the shower curtain, so as not to pull the plumbing from the wall, but it's definitely workable and there is another modern shower in the home.
Joni is wonderful to work with, super responsive to any questions. We'd definitely return to this property.
This lovely cabin was like going back in time - but with all the modern luxuries we are used to. The attention to detail in the renovation and decor is exquisite.
The cabin is clean and easy to access. Entry was easy and parking/road access was a breeze.
The air conditioning and all fans worked well - as we stayed in the summer.
The kitchen was well stocked. We cooked several meals for a family and enjoyed eating outside.
The grounds are well kept and lovely. We walked the yard every morning and breated that cool mountain air.
The cabin feels like it's miles away from civilization but it is not far from town and just minutes to conveniences.
The adults loved the antiques that make this property rustic and give it so much personality. The kids loved that there were multiple TV's with good chanel selections and working WiFi.
Everyone was happy.... we are grateful.
We really enjoyed our 6 night stay in this cabin over the New Year. We were very happy and intrigued by the cabin’s history and décor. Thank you for decorating every room for the holidays – that extra touch means a lot. The location was about 15 minutes from downtown Dahlonega and we loved this little town. The communication was quick and polite. Our family of 4 (one 14 year old girl and one 12 year old boy) had plenty of room. Some things that were extra special for us – the cows feeding right next door, the cast iron pans, the firepit, having some kitchen supplies (like olive oil/sugar), the comfortable bedding/extra blankets, the carport, the old benches on the porch, hearing the cows in the morning, a variety of birds in the yard, having a clean grill, the etched wine glasses, the holiday décor, and the board games. One thing to note – although the yard/house are extremely quiet, the road is close and had an occasional loud motorcycle/car drive by. As stated in the house description, the house is delightfully old and ornate and we thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it.Thank you for having us!
We had stayed at this site a few months earlier when the weather temperature wasnt an issue. Because of the nature of the type of cabin structure , we had some difficulty getting the inside comfy. (Outside temps in the low 20s). The host coordinated with us and we were able to enjoy our long weekend.
Excellent communication. Cabin was perfect. We were very comfortable and had a lot of fun leaping into the very tall comfortable beds. We loved the heated blankets. We were able to enjoy the cows next door who were very vocal with us. the deer running through the neighboring property were fun to watch. We were able to get to the local Walmart in 13 minutes and that's with me driving very slow as I am not accustomed to driving in mountain areas. the town had a lot to offer. The fire pit outside was great and we enjoyed plenty of time on the front patio. Very charming rustic and a good time.
