Amazing place to stay
Absolutely lovely place to stay. Made to feel so welcome and at home from the second we got there. Jonathon and the staff couldnt do more to help. Gorgeous room, very spacious and amazing atmosphere. Will definitely be booking to stay here again in the future

Engine Inn host very pleasant, Bedroom could do with good clean,new bed and bedding .sdly beroom and btroom vlery tired needs some attention. Food good.

Only booked this hotel the night before as our previous hotel had closed down. We tried 2 other hotels for evening meals which were far superior to the engine Inn. The best part of our stay was the full continental breakfast.

A great choice
The Engine Room is a great English pub. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was excellent. The drinks were great, the locals friendly and talkative. The room was very comfortable. They even had a good entertainer. It was the English pub experience you would want to have.it was great value.

An inn of character but....?
An interesting venue with character. Being an industrial archaeology fan, I was happy with the accommodation - the building stems from the late 18th century and is named after a Boulton & Watt steam engine installed just before 1790 across the stream in the former Cark cotton mill. This mill has a history in its own right and was one of the largest in Lancashire at the time - unfortunately it burnt down in 1935, leaving no remains to be subsequently "gentrified". I was intrigued by the inn's history but my wife was more interested in the quality of the accommodation which she thought needed some TLC. However, we had the largest room in the inn at the front and there was plenty of hot water, often lacking in older buildings. Unfortunately the kitchen was closed and so we didn't experience the claimed Home Cooking. Breakfast was modest although fine for my wife who rarely eats more than a banana (which she provided) and I never "do a full English". All in all a memorable experience for one interested in industrial history!

Disappointing
But of a strange stay, room didn't appear to be ready even though we arrived well after four o'clock, not clear where we should park, and evening food was average and to top it off there was live entertainment on until gone eleven o'clock. On the positive the breakfast was very good.

Great pub with amazing staff
Have returned from a long weekend staying at the Engine. Had a great time, the pub is excellent with great food and beer. The staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. The location is excellent, about a mile walk to the centre of Cartmel, 10 min drive to Grange over Sands and of course near to all the lake district has to offer.

Room was not clean. Cups & kettle looked like they had never been cleaned! Mattress had springs poking, most uncomfortable night. Decor very dated and shabby. Staff disorganised, had to wait quite a while for veggie breakfast as staff had forgotten I was veggie even though reminded twice
