Located in Andalucia, in the far south of Spain, the ever-popular Costa del Sol is one of the country’s best-known holiday destinations. The region stretches for almost 100 miles from the east of Malaga to the provincial capital of Cadiz. Along its length you’ll find a huge variety of towns, cities and purpose-built developments as well as an excellent choice of sun-drenched beaches.
The Costa del Sol is best known for the beachside destinations that line the Mediterranean coast. Resorts like Marbella, Puerto Banus and Torremolinos have been attracting holidaymakers for years, with their guaranteed sunshine, great selection of bars and restaurants and choice attractions making them popular with visitors of all ages. Traditional towns and villages can also be found along the length of the Costa, bringing authentic Spanish charm and character to this sun-soaked region.
Thanks to its status as one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations, the Costa del Sol offers a huge variety of accommodation options. Unsurprisingly, the majority of hotels in Costa del Sol can be found right on the coast. Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Marbella, Fuengirola and Nerja all offer a wide selection of hotels, guesthouses, apartments and complexes, although places to stay can be found in every corner of the Costa del Sol.
If you’re looking for a Costa del Sol hotel that’s good for families, you’ll be spoiled for choice no matter where you stay in the region. Almost all of the coast’s destinations have clean, safe beaches and most have pedestrianised promenades that are perfect for afternoon walks with the kids. For a family holiday with a more Spanish feel, look for hotels in Estepona, hotels in Nerja and hotels in the area east of Malaga as these areas have a more traditional feel and local influence.
Alternatively, if you want an action packed family holiday, head to one of the Costa del Sol’s major resort towns. Most of the hotels in Fuengirola, Torremolinos, and Marbella will be within easy reach of a choice of family friendly attractions as well as a selection of beaches and pedestrianised areas.
Another of the Costa del Sol’s major draws is its nightlife. The best-known destination for holidaymakers who want to party the night away is Marbella. Famous for its exclusive clubs, bars and restaurants, Marbella hotels are the perfect choice if you want to push the boat out. Puerto Banus, just 15 minutes down the coast from Marbella, is another popular destination for nightlife while Malaga, Fuengirola, Nerja and Estepona also all boast a great choice of nightspots.
Costa del Sol hotels range from large, all-inclusive resorts to small family-run guesthouses. Although many of the hotels in Costa del Sol are geared towards families and sun-worshippers, there are also a number of beautifully designed 5 star hotels and boutique resorts to be found, particularly in the area around Marbella.
Many of the larger, inclusive Costa del Sol hotels are located close to the Med in Fuengirola, Torremolinos and the stretch of coast west of Malaga. To the east of Malaga, and in destinations like Ojen and Estepona, the hotels are smaller and often more traditional, giving you the chance to experience a more Spanish side of this popular region.
As well as hotels, resorts and guesthouses, the Costa del Sol is home to a large number of self-catered apartments and villas. These are found all along the coast and are a great choice for visitors who want to experience the region like a local.
Although the most popular activities in the Costa del Sol are swimming and sunbathing, there’s a lot more to the region than just its beaches. A number of water parks can be found along the coast, perfect for families who want to cool off and have fun in the hot Spanish sun.
There are also a lot of water-based activities to try along the coast. If your hotel in Costa del Sol is on the beach, they’ll probably be able to arrange jet skiing, parasailing, diving and sailing for you during your stay. Alternatively, simply stroll along the promenade closest to your hotel and see what local activity companies have to offer.
Away from the coast, Andalucia’s mountains are home to a wealth of traditional villages and authentic attractions. Visit the Pueblos Blancos, the pretty town of Ojen and the Elviria Mountains, a Unesco biosphere that’s known for its mountain biking and walking routes. Quad tours, 4x4 excursions, horse-riding and eco tours are all also available in the mountains and countryside that lie inland from the resorts of the Med.
