One of the oldest industries in Ireland is the quarrying of marble in the Connemara. Connemara marble is over 600 million years old, and has been traded by Irish merchants for centuries. The Connemara Marble Visitor Centre is a celebration of the history of marble quarrying in Ireland and the fine crafts developed around it.
At the quarry where the Connemara Marble Visitor Centre is located, marble is quarried for, cut, shaped and polished into the finished product. This quarry in Clifden has been operating since 1822 and marble from here can be found as close as the walls of Galway Cathedral floor and as far away as the walls of the Senate Chamber in the State Capital Building in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
The visitor centre has educational exhibits explaining how the marble is quarried and polished, as well as Ireland’s largest display of Connemara marble jewellery. There’s a gift shop where a large array of marble products are for sale, from clocks to ashtrays, marble eggs, cheese boards, paperweights and chessboards.
Connemara Marble Visitor Centre makes a great day out for all the family. There are exhibits to inspire and educated children of all ages, and enough to keep the adults entertained too.
