Connemara Championship Golf Links stakes a claim to being Ireland’s favourite golf course. It’s a tall order to meet with Ireland’s wealth of beautiful, scenic and challenging greens, but it seems Connemara Championship Golf Links does have the goods to meet it. It is the only links golf course in the county of Galway. Situated just outside the coastal town of Clifden, it draws players in, both nationally and internationally.
The first attraction of the course is its stunning location. Set against the backdrop of the wild Atlantic Ocean on the edge of Europe, find your focus as you watch the waves lapping close to the edges of the course. To either side of the course you’re surrounded by classical Galway scenery, the breathtaking 12 Bens Mountain Range dominates the inland view. Slyne Head Lighthouse and Grainne O’Malley’s Castle will also catch your attention from a distance as you make your way around the course.
The course itself has challenges to interest golfers of any ability. Designed by Eddie Hackett in 1973, there are 18 holes to follow. The final six holes present some particularly difficult technical challenges, making it hard even for the most experienced of golfers to achieve a par.
After tackling the course, the Links clubhouse has a fantastic bar, café and restaurant. Refresh yourself with a light snack, celebrate the day with a pint of dark stout, or refuel after your golfing labours with a gourmet meal. The clubhouse also features a pro shop where you can buy or rent any golfing gear that you might need for a day out on the green.
Other facilities include a practice range and a putting green. There are spectacular beaches to be explored, as well as pony trekking, biking and walking trails near to the course. There’s enough for the whole family to enjoy a grand day out.
