Vast expanses of farmland, craggy natural landscapes and vineyards mean any visit to York in Nebraska should be accompanied by a hire car. There is plenty to see here, but it’s all very spread out. Fortunately, the roads are clear and straight and driving around here is a cinch.

An hour’s drive east on the I-80 is Lincoln, a big city with plenty of opportunities for shopping and dining out. There is also an extensive system of walking and cycling trails around the city, which is a great way to explore. Wilderness Park is a beautiful patch of lush greenery where you can go horse riding, hiking and cycling.
Omaha is just northeast of Lincoln and about two hours by rental car from York (a journey of 100 miles). The Old Market district is the spot for independent shops and trendy bars. Street musicians keep things lively and the historic buildings that line the cobblestone streets now house cafes and jazz clubs. The photogenic Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge offers some great views of the city, and as you walk across you can step into the neighbouring state of Iowa.
Rent a hire car in York and you will find some great driving country with long expanses of tarmac, which are relatively quiet. If you are heading to Omaha then the city has its own parking website which can advise you on the best places to leave your car.
