Why rent a car in Rhodes?

The island of Rhodes, in the Aegean Sea, is the largest of the Dodecanese islands known for their beach resorts. It is located northeast of Crete and southeast of Athens. The city of Rhodes has a walled medieval old town, which has been awarded the status of Unesco World Heritage site. It is also home to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Being on an island filled with ancient sites, villages and gorgeous beaches, a car hire in Rhodes can be the most time-efficient way to travel and sightsee across the island, making the most of your visit.

How to get to and around Rhodes?

International flights arrive at Rhodes International airport (RHO), also known as Diagoras airport, about nine miles southwest of Rhodes Town. A 20-minute journey from the airport in a Rhodes hire car will deliver you to Rhodes.

Situated so near the southwest coast of Turkey, Rhodes is only a hop away from several other desirable tourist destinations, such as Dalaman and Fethiye, and the Mediterranean resort town of Marmaris. You can also stop by Bodrum, site of the ruins of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, also considered one of the “Seven Wonders of the Ancient World”.

What brands are available?

A large number of Rhodes car hire companies are available to choose from, including Green Motion, which offers environmentally friendly, low-emission cars.

  • Alamo
  • Avis

  • Must-sees within an easy drive of Rhodes

Lindos, the second most populous town on the island after Rhodes, is 30 miles to the south – approximately a 50-minute drive in a Rhodes hire car – and must be visited. The Lindos acropolis was built in the 10th century BC by the Dorians, prior to the founding of Rhodes in 408 BC. From the slopes of a hill overlooking the bay, it offers spectacular views of the island’s eastern coastline.

Close to the Lindos acropolis, the clear, turquoise seawater along Agios Pavlos (Saint Paul) beach will be inviting you for a swim. On the beach stands a chapel dedicated to Saint Paul, who came on an evangelical mission to the island in 43 AD.

About 17 miles south of Rhodes Town, or a 30-minute drive via the E095 in a Rhodes hire car, is the Panagia Tsambika monastery on top of a hill with stunning views. The monastery is considered a protector of the island of Rhodes, and several myths are linked with it. The icon of Panagia Tsambika, for example, is believed to give fertility to childless women.

Tips and tricks for driving in Greece

You must be older than 18 years old to be able to drive in Greece with a foreign driver’s licence. Always carry a valid driver’s licence, proof of insurance, an ID (passport) and your car hire papers.

Drive on the right side, overtake on the left. Wearing seat belts is compulsory. Unless you speak Greek, it is best to use a GPS device for directions.

Greek drivers are known to be impatient, drive aggressively and often ignore driving rules, so stick to your own right lane and don’t get in the way of others speeding ahead. The speed limit on Greek motorways is about 80mph and 32mph in residential areas. This does not stop some Greek drivers from going much faster. There are no motorways on any of the islands. Watch out for motorbike drivers, driving erratically – they are the no.1 cause of accidents in Greece.
