The city of Peterborough has all the nightlife and shopping that city lovers enjoy. Lansdowne Place or Peterborough Square are malls with shops and various leisure facilities and downtown Peterborough has a range of independent shops and restaurants. Another must-see in the city is the Peterborough lift lock on the Trent Severn Waterway. It is the world’s highest hydraulic boat lift, which rises 20 metres into the air. Further afield is the popular city of Toronto, which is a drive of just under two hours from Peterborough. With a great buzz and a big city skyline, Toronto offers a change in pace. Try the new and improved waterfront area, which, like so much of this city, has seen some extensive redevelopment over the past two decades. With bars, restaurants and moorings for some impressive-looking boats, it is easy to idle away a day here. Just 45 minutes, or 16 miles from Toronto’s western border is Mississauga, another city on the edges of Lake Ontario. Visit Port Credit, dubbed the village on the lake, to see the red and white lighthouse that still guides boats into the harbour.
Nearly 70 miles east from Peterborough is Belleville. Situated on the Bay Of Quinte, fishing and boating are popular pastimes here. There are also more than 15 different golf courses in the area. Ottawa, Canada’s capital city is a further 170 miles from Belleville, a drive of about two and a half hours. Rich with museums and architectural gems, Ottawa – like so many of Canada’s cities – finds its heartbeat at the water’s edge. The Rideau canal and the Rideau river snake through the centre and dictate so much of the city’s pace. In summer it is busy with boats, while in winter it turns into an ice rink.
Standard driving laws apply in Canada. Depending on the area, some road signs will be in French. Take care and plan your journeys during winter months as the weather can be severe and change quickly.
