A flourishing centre of arts and culture, Lubbock, Texas has built on its big reputation as the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll legend Buddy Holly. It really lives up to its nickname of ‘Hub City’ for any visitor to the South Plains. The annual music festival in Holly’s honour attracts top acts, but you can visit the dedicated museum and take the Walk of Fame at any time of year. Add in the city’s excellent nightlife, bars and restaurants, the region’s highly rated wineries and important military historical sites, and you’ll see why Lubbock is high on the Texas must-visit list.
With a hire car you’ll be able to make the most of your break by venturing beyond the city limits to other Texas destinations such as Amarillo (an hour and 50 minutes’ drive north up Interstate 27), where kids will love the mind-blowing Don Harrington Discovery Center – and no one can resist the iconic Cadillac Ranch art installation!
Fly into Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport and from there it’s a 15-minute drive via the I-27 south into the centre of Lubbock.
With a hire car at your disposal, you can explore other cities across the state such as Plainview, 47 miles north, where the Museum of the Llano Estacado lends you valuable perspective on frontier life and the Panhandle region’s history.
Choose from a wide selection of hire car providers in Lubbock, to suit every budget and requirement, from Enterprise and Budget to Hertz and National.
There’s much more to Lubbock than Buddy Holly, and you’ll want to take advantage of the city’s excellent museums. The National Ranching Heritage Center features a wonderland of relocated buildings dating back to frontier days, while at the Museum of Texas Tech University you’ll be wowed by the planetarium and the sheer variety of exhibits cutting right across the arts and sciences.
Beyond Lubbock, your hire car can take you to other exciting destinations such as Oklahoma City, 350 miles northwest. Getting there is half the fun on a grand American road trip – although yet more thrills await at the famous Frontier City amusement park.
On the way to Oklahoma City you’ll pass through Wichita Falls around halfway. It’s an ideal stop-off to relax in the beautiful surroundings of Lake Arrowhead State Park, where you can enjoy lake swimming, water skiing and excellent fishing. Sports fans will struggle to resist the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Driving in Lubbock, like much of the US, is largely straightforward, with wide lanes and simple road layouts. In the wide-open spaces of Texas, yours can often be the only car in sight! Cars are left-hand drive, so you’ll be driving on the right-hand side of the road. Unlike in the UK, you can overtake on both sides, which can be a little unnerving at first. Most American cars are automatic, so remember to request a stick shift if you would prefer one.
