Lexington is at the heart of Kentucky’s Bluegrass region – think lush countryside, acres of farmland and beautiful houses. This is the land of horses and bourbon and there are numerous tours to help visitors learn about both. Getting a rental car in Lexington is the best way to explore the surrounding countryside. Horse breeding has been one of the area’s biggest industries since Lexington was first settled and the most successful horses have celebrity status here. Take a tour of one of the many horse farms in the area, see where they live, what they eat and watch them race. Otherwise follow the scent of whiskey and head to one of the many distilleries in the area.
Blue Grass Airport just on the outskirts of Lexington offers domestic flights, while Louisville International Airport is 80 miles away, or an hour and 15 minutes by car. Lexington is served by the I-64, which runs from Missouri to the Virginia coast, and the I-75, which runs north from Florida, through Georgia and Tennessee.

The riverside city of Frankfort is 30 miles west of Lexington on the I-64, a drive of 40 minutes. If you gain a taste for it you could continue your tour to Louisville , which was once home to more than 50 whiskey distilleries. It is now something of a pilgrimage destination for fans of the drink, with museums and distillery tours available and plenty of bars where you can sample the produce.
The city of Columbus is four and a half hours’ west of Lexington, a drive of nearly 300 miles. Spend time at the Scioto Mile, an urban park on the banks of the river where the paths gently curve between manicured lawns and pretty gardens. The Scioto Audubon just along the river is a great viewing spot for shore birds. Foodies should head for the city’s North Market, where local produce and artisan food takes centre stage, or visit the German Village, an historic downtown neighbourhood with pretty architecture and delicious bakeries.
The pretty city of Cincinnati is one hour and 20 minutes from Lexington, an 80-mile drive north on the I-75. This city is just over the state border into Ohio and the historic downtown area has gorgeous colourful buildings and cobblestone streets. The large riverfront area has a playground, a walking trail and a plethora of bars and restaurants.
Long country roads surround Lexington and there are a number of leisure drive routes in the area. Located at the intersection of I-64 and I-75, it has great road links with the rest of the country. Downtown there are lots of car parks available and the ring road that surrounds the town links the main arterial routes.
