The city of Enterprise is hidden away in the southeastern corner of the Yellowhammer State, about 50 miles west of the border with Georgia, and 30 miles north of Florida. It’s a proud, entrepreneurial city, which reinvented itself after its cotton industry was destroyed by a boll weevil epidemic in the early 20th century.
The conversion to peanut farming was so successful, and the economy was left in such good health, that the pest is now venerated by the locals. In fact, they erected a statue to it on Main Street, in an example of the quirky personality that’s shaped this charming part of the world.
Book a hire car in Enterprise and you’ll be perfectly placed for exploring Alabama. Plus, because of its prime location, Enterprise makes an excellent base for trips to the wetlands of Florida, or further afield to the megacities of Atlanta, Jacksonville and New Orleans (about three and a half, four and five hours away, respectively).
The nearest transit hub to Enterprise is Dothan International Airport. Most visitors will fly in and pick up the rental cars from here. With keys in hand, you should be able to make it to Enterprise in around 45 minutes, when you follow the US-84 E west. There’s not much public transport in Alabama, so a hire car is essential for getting around.
Most rental cars in Enterprise are provided by National. There’s a wide range of models to pick from though, including minivans, SUVs and premium sedans – perfect for cruising the wide-open roads of southern USA.
It would be easy to spend a good few weeks simply taking in the natural beauty of Alabama, but that would be to neglect the history of the state, which played a vital, often fraught, but always crucial role in the civil rights movement.
It’s a past you can explore at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, two and half hours north on the I-65, through a moving collage of images, film and first-hand accounts.
Long before the Old World arrived on these shores, Alabama was home to the Mississippians, one of the largest of the ancient American civilisations. If you’d like to learn about them, head to the Moundville Archaeological Park in Moundville, about three and a half hours northwest of Enterprise by hire car. It’s one of the best-preserved examples of ancient native American habitation anywhere in the US. Explore it on foot, or interact with artefacts at the on-site museum.
Driving in the USA is generally straightforward: wide lanes, low-speed traffic and plenty of signage mean you shouldn’t have too many problems. If you’re from the UK, you may be surprised by ‘undertaking’ – cars here will pass you on both sides on a multilane highway – but you’ll soon get used to it.
