“I hope you find the peace and God’s presence here that my family found at this special place.”
In 1943, my parents purchased this 80-acre farm, farmhouse, and barn for $2,800. The current home was built in 1944 on the site of the original homestead. The white barn—still standing—is over 100 years old.
Because World War II limited building materials, the home was constructed entirely from reclaimed lumber purchased in Brighton, Illinois. There was no basement originally—my dad dug one by hand using a scoop pulled by mules, and my grandpa hand-hewed a massive white oak beam from the farm. That beam still supports the house today.
At first, there was no electricity, no gas, and no running water. We lived by kerosene lamps, cooked on a wood stove, and used rainwater collected in a cistern (still visible behind the house).
In 1964, a living room addition was added, requiring the hand-poured concrete steps to be moved—using my dad’s old John Deere tractor. Those steps still sit nearby.
In 2003, with help from my family, the Homestead Retreat became one of the first guesthouses in Grafton. A new porch, a sunroom conversion, fresh paint, and a few pillows later—we were ready. Mostly, it’s just as Mom and Dad left it…only now with running water and indoor plumbing!
Turning my childhood home into the Grafton Homestead Retreat has been—and continues to be—a true labor of love.

Awesome property to stay at, we didn't have time to explore around but there is a lot of fun stuff to do. We forgot a baby monitor camera and realized it when we were halfway home (3.5 hours) and Patricia mailed it to us the next day! 100% would recommend
My family and I loved the Homestead. A wonderful country home. Very nice amenities both inside and out. Very clean and beautifully decorated. The owner was very accommodating! We enjoyed all the Homestead had to offer.
What an amazing place for a rest and reset. The nature trail was perfect along with a place to do some star gazing. We enjoy sitting on the dock and the front porch provided great comfy sitting. I would definitely atay again.
The owner was accommodating of what became a large family gathering. All ages enjoyed the property. The pond was very popular.
Quiet beautiful setting not far from Grafton activities. The large front porch is a great feature.
This place was so wonderful and relaxing. Such a throwback to my childhood but yet had modern amenities. Owners had everything you could need. We will definitely come back.
We had the best stay at the homestead! Everything was perfect and peaceful and the place had everything we needed for our stay and some very surprising extras too! They really put a lot of thought into the place and the kids said it was one of their best vacations yet! They loved the peddle boat and fishing and the "hangout" garage as well! Def recommend!
Our stay was wonderful - the house was clean and so welcoming. We spent a lot of time on the front porch reading. We loved the trails and walked them several times each day. Enjoyed sitting around the fire (bring fire wood if you don’t want to collect your own). Our stay was exactly what we needed - relaxing. Thank you!
The Homestead is a one of a kind experience. Patricia and Shirley are extremely accommodating! They go the extra mile to share their families’ experiences with you. From hiking to fishing, there are surprises around every corner. The game room also adds a perfect touch. You won’t be disappointed! We highly recommend this property!!
Nice property. It's fun to spend time on the porches and watch the birds.
The house has some years on it but that's it's charm. The game room is a nice addition. Open the doors and enjoy that.
Nice trails around the property. It's so quiet. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
We found The Homestead to be a wonderful haven, perfect for relaxation and hitting the "reset" button. It's so much more than a house -- it truly is a home. You can feel the love of a family throughout each room. We especially appreciated the untouched farm ambiance, just like walking into grandma's when we were young. We found the accommodations to be comfortable for our week long stay. We slept long and soundly every night! The trails and spots of serenity throughout the property were welcoming, thoughtful and special. Much time was spent outside walking, reading and peddling around the lake. During hot summer days, we appreciated ample shade provided by beautiful, mature trees and continuously commented about the constant gentle breeze. This farm homestead is packed with history and interesting finds, including wildlife. Thank you, Patricia and Shirley, for sharing your lovely home.
We enjoyed our stay at the Homestead Retreat very much! We gathered as a family to celebrate Thanksgiving and spent from Tuesday through Saturday morning there. Our hosts went above and beyond to make us comfortable, allowing us to park our camper and run electricity for heat so we had additional bed space and a place for our large dog to sleep and stay when we left the house. Some of our family stayed with us and other family members from St. Louis joined us just for dinner. The hosts provided such welcoming touches, too, such as the ingredients to make homemade pancakes, luxury shampoo and conditioner, all of the essential staples, and some yummy snacks. They called to check that we found everything we needed. Communication with them was always so easy. They responded quickly to any messages we sent. Our three generations of family had a wonderful Thanksgiving with lots of love and laughter in this cozy home. We hope to return sometime soon!
This was a post school end, pre summer activities brain break before our days were filled with busy schedules. Lovely property and house. My 19 year old throughly enjoyed fishing all hours of the day and night. 15 year old was tagging along for mum and brothers sake but in reality i could tell it did him good away from his faming machine and friends. My dog and i absolutely loved going on walks and exploring. If you are looking for getting away from city , modt definitely came to the right place.i would strongly advise packing some groceries or purchasing on u r wsy to retreat like basics eggs, bread , meat etc if you want to stay put. The nearest grocery is 30-45 mins away. We ate out 2 times but stayed put mostly. Definitely recommend Pere Marquette lodge restaurant. Thank you patricia and shirley for sharing your place.
The property was amazing! The house gave me warm memories of my grandparents. Bed was extremely comfortable, we slept great. Definitely want to come back!
We loved our stay here!! It offers so much and is a perfect location! The owners are great and answered every question and responded instantly! Highly recommend and we will for sure be back for our next trip to Grafton!
Our stay was perfect ! Everyone had a great time and it all was fantastic !! I will for sure would like to stay again . Thank you so much , Randy Force
There were lots of nice thoughtful touches to the place, and we enjoyed the beautiful property too. They even put up a birthday banner for my wife (can't speak to whether they'll always do that one, but it was very sweet)
From start to finish this was one of the best trips we have taken for a quick weekend getaway to unwind! The property and accommodations were fantastic, and we will definitely be back!
