About this property

San Lorenzo - Luxury Monastery

  • The magnificent monastery of San Lorenzo is located in Collazzone, a charming medieval hilltop village characterized by the unmistakable features of the Umbrian landscape and surrounded by a 3-hectare park featuring flowers and plants native to the area, aromatic herbs, and a 3,500-square-meter olive grove. Its history is rich and evocative. It was built as a Benedictine abbey and ceded to the Poor Clares in 1228. Blessed Simone da Collazzone, a companion of St. Francis of Assisi, witnessed the donation, and his mother, Countess Matilde, and his sisters moved to the monastery to live as cloistered nuns. Legend has it that the Franciscan poet Jacopone da Todi found his final refuge among the Poor Clares. In 1520, the monastery served as a hiding place for Thadea, the illegitimate daughter of Emperor Charles V. Subsequently, the convent was likely gradually abandoned. When Napoleon invaded Italy, he confiscated and sold countless ecclesiastical properties to private individuals, including the monastery, which in 1805 came into the possession of the family that still cares for it today with great love and passion. The San Lorenzo monastery complex, which is arranged around an open-air courtyard of rare beauty, is clad externally in exposed ancient stone and was recently restored under the supervision of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage. Preserving all the original details and features served as the guiding principle for the restoration work, and the color palette and materials draw inspiration from the Umbrian countryside. The interiors are the result of a stylistic choice that perfectly blends the old and the new, combining fine furnishings with contemporary design elements while offering every comfort; all bedrooms are equipped with air conditioning. The beautiful private pool features a covered area for outdoor dining and a living area. Two additional covered outdoor areas are equipped with a wood-fired oven and a barbecue—ideal spots for cooking and enjoying pleasant outdoor dinners. The San Lorenzo Monastery offers a unique opportunity to host events and receptions in its spacious halls and outdoor areas, such as the courtyard. The property includes a Romanesque church located just outside the garden, featuring an ancient crypt; the church may be used occasionally for religious services. Upon request—and not included in the rent—the house features a majestic living area on the first floor with direct access from the courtyard. The room is equipped with tables, chairs, a projection screen, and a restroom, and is perfectly suited for business meetings, ceremonies, and parties. The Monastery, located in Collazzone, is the perfect starting point for excursions to Todi, Orvieto, Perugia, Assisi, Spoleto, and even Florence and Rome. It is just a few kilometers from the E45 highway, which connects to all of Umbria, Tuscany, and Lazio. Essential services and shops are located in Collazzone, just a 5-minute walk away.
    Interior:
The property is divided into two sections, each with its own exterior entrance: the main house and the guesthouse.

Climbing another flight of stairs, we find two double bedrooms with two adjacent bathrooms, each with a shower; the floor is completed by a double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom featuring a shower. ANNEX
An outdoor staircase leads from the garden to the entrance door of the annex, which consists of a large open-concept living area equipped with air conditioning, featuring a dining area, a kitchenette, and a living room furnished with plush sofas and a fireplace. To the left is a double bedroom with a loft bed and an en-suite bathroom with a shower, and to the right of the living room is another double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom with a shower. On a raised level, with independent access only from the outside, stands the Monastery Tower, which consists of a double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom featuring a shower.
    Park:
The estate on which the monastery is located covers approximately 3 hectares and is partly covered by a beautiful 3,500-square-meter olive grove with charming lighting for the evening. The monastery, with breathtaking views of the Umbrian hills, is surrounded by numerous types of plants, shrubs, tall trees, and flowers that enliven the setting—all native to the area. Inside the wonderful open-air courtyard is a large, charming dining area furnished with a table and chairs. Other dining areas—perfect for enjoying complete tranquility or engaging in pleasant conversation over a glass of good wine—are located in front of the main entrance and next to the staircase of the annex, both equipped with a barbecue and a wood-fired oven. For added comfort, the pool area features another large gazebo with a kitchenette, refrigerator, table, chairs, sofas, and armchairs. Just past the automatic iron gate, there is an open-air parking area with space for 10 cars. Note: Please be advised that the photo shoots are usually taken in the spring; therefore, the colors and blooms of the gardens, lawns, and parks may differ when you arrive at the villa.
