Vibrant and modern Accra, the buzzing seaside capital of Ghana has shopping and nightlife to rival any Western metropolis. It has British, Dutch, Danish and other European influences, but retains a distinctly West African flavour, with plenty of cultural attractions.

When to Book Flights to Accra

The temperature in Accra does not change a great deal throughout the year, hovering between 25°C and 30°C. Most visitors head to Accra between November and April when the temperatures are coolest, there is less chance of rain and less humidity. This is also the best time to explore the countryside or go on safari.

The rains fall between May and July and again around October. High summer is dry, but warm.

How to Find the Best Flight Deals to Accra

There are few direct flights from the UK to Accra, but it is still possible to find a cheap deal when you book with Expedia. Planning ahead if you are travelling during the popular winter months and flexibility with dates are key.

Ghana only has one international airport but there are several ways to get there, using the ‘Nearby airports’ option could unlock routes from different departure points in the UK. The ‘Show flexible dates’ option will also reveal prices on different days of the week.

To filter results by airline, duration, number of connections and other criteria, use the ‘Show options’ drop down or the buttons on the left of the search results.

How to Get to and Around Accra

From the airport the best way to get to Accra is by taxi, and there will be no shortage of drivers looking for business – but agree a fare first.

In the city there are minibuses and pick-ups, known as tro-tro, running set routes, it can be chaotic but locals are generally helpful. Taxis are the other option to get around, and there are plenty in the centre. Hotels can also usually conjure up a driver for a day.

Renting a car is possible at the airport but Accra’s anarchic traffic is not for the fainthearted. A car is a more viable option if you intend on heading out of town, but Ghana also has long-distance buses and trains

Head to the National Museum of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum to learn about the history of Ghana.
