About this property
1802 cottage once part of Monticello and owned by Thomas Jefferson
Auburn Hill MADISON cottage Circa 1802 offer a peaceful private setting on a historic horse farm once owned by Thomas Jefferson and part of the original Monticello estate, a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. with close proximity to wineries (10 minutes), town (12 minutes), Monticello (next door neighbor), Rivanna River(borders the property) Carter mountain (8 minutes), Clifton Inn ( 2 minutes) and many other activities. The cottage dates back to 1805, the property was once part of Monticelo and owned by Thomas Jefferson. It has been completely updated and modernized, combining the best of both worlds. There is a private lake (catch and release fishing), along with a 14 foot dingy for those qualified to operate it!
A "Jimmy Buffet Key West" 20 x 40 heated salt water pool complex with a PRIVATE HIIGH END JACUZZI FOR EACH COTTAGE a large grill with side burner, two large bars, pavilion, indoor/outdoor showers, bathroom/changing room, multiple outdoor games, two fire pit, two double hammocks and mountain/pasture views with complete privacy to enjoy the area. Most times it will be only you at the pool area. It is a working farm so there will be help around the farm to keep it well groomed for visitors.
Magical setting for watching wildlife like the bald eagles soaring down the river, multiple deer grazing in the fields, geese and ducks floating on the lake, or Great Blue Heron trying to catch lunch. Once on the farm you do not see any close neighbors (cottage is near main house, but situated to maximize privacy), unless you count looking up at the distant hillside to Monticello(see photo). The whistle or light rumbling of the distant train across the river can be heard on occasion. You can walk down to the rivers edge and sit on a large bolder watching the occasion kayakers floating down the river(or bring your own). James Monroe's home is only 10 minutes away, along with 14 wineries and 15 beer or cider breweries within 10 miles of the farm.

Overall a great stay. The location was perfect and easy to get to wineries, breweries, and many restaurants, but was secluded enough to feel like a vacation.
Beautiful property! Quaint accommodations and awesome shared amenities. Met and became fast friends with a couple staying in the other cottage. Very cool getaway!
Historic property just minutes from Monticello (sightseeing) and the Clifton Inn (dinner). While a bit small, it is a very cozy and appealing place. And very quiet. Having your own hot tub and hammock, and practically your own salt pool, is very special.
The property is Gorgeous with green rolling hills, a pond with geese and baby geese on the way, deer, beaver and lots of other wildlife! Everything was so close to Charlottesville…Carter’s Mountain, Restaurants, Wineries and a Wonderful treasure down the road at Simeon’s! We loved having picnics on the grounds watching the sunset! Steve was A Great host! Would highly recommend for a relaxing getaway!
We enjoyed our stay. We had everything we needed. The property is beautiful and the pool is a bonus. We also enjoyed having a Keurig so that we could bring our favorite coffee!
What a lovely weekend we had at Steve’s beautiful home. The location is perfect for winery tours, the University, some remarkable regional restaurants, or just to relax by the pool. We will definitely be returning, either with another couple or just the two of us, for another perfect getaway. Thank you, Steve, for your hospitality.
We rented both the top and bottom units for our girls weekend and had an amazing time! The pool and it’s amenities were were great :) The cottage was cozy. The location was perfect! Steven was very kind and responsive. It was a nice getaway.
Perfect cottage for our Charlottesville stay! Central to where we visited. Pool was refreshing at the end of the day. Steve and Casey were wonderful hosts!
Excellent location for our visit to Monticello and Charlottesville. The cottage was very clean and comfortable and the foothills scenery - plus wildlife - was beautiful. The weather was a bit cool for the hot tub but the farm and pastures were exactly the respite for which we were planning. Our host, Steve, called to check in and offer recommendations. Great visit to Monticello, Jefferson Vineyards, the Highlands, Boars Head and Charlottesville.
This is a hidden gem in a convenient location near a winery and historical attractions. Definitely for a nature lover! No frills or fuss-just a cool place with nice amenities. The Jefferson dwelling is not for tall people as the ceiling is low. The host is hospitable and the place is very clean.

Nice place but small. We were expecting a cottage not the attic. So not much space to lounge in.Luckily the weather was great so we spent most of our downtime out by the pool which is a gorgeous place to hang out!
My husband and I came up for a few days to just get away and we didnt know what to expect. Steve surpassed all of our expectations and we left feeling refreshed from our trip and made a new friend along the way! The hospitality was excellent and we loved being greeted by the farm mascot, Casey! We will be back. The farm has the most beautiful views, the hot tubs are a wonderful added bonus as well as all the amenities provided. Thank you again Steve for being such a wonderful host!!
We had an amazing visit. The host was friendly & welcoming. We were truly able to recharge. We swam, grilled, relaxed in the hot tub, went fishing, hiked & explored the local area.
The views on this property were absolutely stunning. The sunsets were breathtaking. Monticello, downtown Charlottesville, winery’s, brewery’s & restaurants were all a short distance. If you like a fancy grocery store, Wegmans is 20 minutes away. This beautiful farm made it easy to relax.
We cannot thank our hosts enough for their excellent hospitality, highly recommend!
My lifelong friend and I came for a girls weekend in October and this property did not disappoint!! It is an absolutely beautiful place; peaceful and quiet. There were two other groups of guests staying in the other two rentals, but they were all awesome. My only regret is that we weren't able to stay longer. I would absolutely recommend this property to anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle and just unwind for a bit. The fall foliage was absolutely stunning, there were deer roaming everywhere, and the American flag was proudly displayed in multiple spots. We loved this place so much that we plan to return next year!! 10 out of 10, highly recommend!
My husband and I checked in for our 8 day stay in the Madison at Auburn Hill Farm and immediately had a problem. He’s 6’3” and the ceilings were mostly closer to mid 5’ range. Thankfully, the host was able to accommodate us by moving us to The Cowboy Hideaway. This spacious cabin had all of the amenities we needed and more. There was a private hot tub, grill, patio set and fire pit with tons of views. We truly enjoyed our stay on the property.

Gorgeous farm…
Do not stay in this unit(Madison) if you are over 5’5”. Ceiling is very low, dormers make it lower. Parking is far from unit with no night time lighting on the pathway. I was there during the fall and the colors were magnificent! The farm was beautiful. The area great to explore. Host leaves no book with recommendations of laces to see or restaurants to enjoy. People in town were very friendly and helped me out a lot. A book with that and instructions for the stove, check out process, etc. would be helpful.

A bit disappointed
The place was cute and clean, but the unit we had was very small. The upstairs unit had slanted ceilings so I spent the weekend hitting my head and ducking the entire time. I’m only 5’ 9”, but I felt like a giant in a kid’s place house. In top of the that, the private pool and hot tub weren’t private at all. In fact, the pool is shared by all the guests and the hot tub wash fenced in and at the far end of the property, not at all convenient or romantic. It was a beautiful farm and very cute, the wildlife was amazing and proximity to downtown C’Ville was good, but I won’t do it again. The property owner and farm manager were extremely nice and professional.

Historic property stay
We look for unique properties to stay. I gave a 5 star review based upon the fact that this cottage was once owned by and once on Thomas Jefferson's land. Also because of the location on nice large farm property and the amenities. We did not use the pool or hot tub but they looked nice. The check-in did not go smoothly because we never received check-in info from VRBO. I had to send an email to the owner to get access but he responded back promptly. The rental is a 1 1/2 story brick building. The exterior is brick and is well maintained for its age. There is a lower rental called "The Madison". We stayed in the upstairs rental called "The Jefferson". It was made into a rental but should be clearly stated in the description about very restricted ceiling height. Perhaps the downstairs rental would have been better for us. It was difficult to walk through the unit because at 6' height I had to walk through the center to not hit my head on the sloped ceiling (although I did bump it many times during our 2 day stay - as did my 5' tall wife a couple times). About half way through the unit I had to duck my head to navigate around the bathroom which juts out into the main walkway. The bathroom is very small. The unit was well stocked with what most people would want. There is no cable TV so you we had to watch our local TV programing on my laptop through our Hulu subscription. Monticello and Monroe's home are both nearby and good places to visit. There are a lot of wineries close by.

Excellent location/vacation EXCEPT . . . . .
The view/location was amazing, beautiful mountain view, pristine pool area and functional rooms. However, my wife has significant allergies (which is why we always book at places that don’t permit pets/animals). When we arrived, we immediately noticed the odor of mold. Though the remainder of the house was clean and tidy, we discovered that both of the a/c units had mold that were putting mold spores into the air and my wife immediately began having trouble breathing. Though it was late (after 2100) we notified the owner of the issues but he did not respond to our text until the next morning. By then I had already gone out to purchase cleaning supplies and my wife had already cleaned the a/c units. She was able to breath the remainder of our stay. The folks in the room below complained to us that their a/c also had mold. Not sure if they told the owner or not. We were given a $5.00 bottle of wine for our troubles. I would expect better treatment, especially since my wife cleaned their units for them, which took her over 2 hours.
