Little Rock - Central Arkansas Holiday Packages
Take a walking tour around Arkansas’ capital city to see gorgeous modern architecture, explore spacious urban parks and attend theatre shows.
Little Rock is Arkansas’ most populous city, its wider Central Arkansas region extending outward from the city’s elegant and historic riverfront downtown. A walk around the pretty banks of the Arkansas River will take you past a stunning collection of local landmarks, including early 20th-century architecture, important civil rights movement sights and thriving arts venues. Learn about the city’s history and explore the pretty river trails that loop downtown via historic bridges.
Little Rock got its name from a small rock formation that was historically used as a landmark and river crossing by early pioneers, who knew it as “La Petite Roche.” See the site where the name originated in downtown’s Riverfront Park. Check out the River Market to try local restaurant fare and farm-fresh produce or pick up picnic ingredients. Head to MacArthur Park and relax on the grass by the ponds. This park also contains the Arkansas Art Centre and the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History.
Explore the interactive Museum of Discovery and learn about Heifer International’s struggle to end global poverty at the organization’s centers in Little Rock and Perryville. See some of the area’s African-American civil rights landmark sights for yourself at the Central High School National Historic Site and Museum, where the famous Little Rock Nine enrolled in 1957. View statues dedicated to these students in front of the State Capitol, a stunning structure built in 1925 in the style of the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C.
Head to Midtown’s War Memorial Park to find the city’s zoo and a large sports stadium. Along the river and to the west of downtown Little Rock, follow a walking and cycling trail toward Pinnacle Mountain State Park. Find more serene natural surroundings in Wildwood Park for the Arts, home to Little Rock’s Unique Botanical Gardens.
Get in to Little Rock via the city’s domestic airport, located a short distance east of downtown. Amtrak and Greyhound services also reach the city. Downtown Little Rock has a convenient River Rail Trolley system, however, a car is recommended to see the outer suburbs. Fall and spring present ideal weather in Little Rock. Visit over the Memorial Day weekend to experience the annual Riverfest arts celebration.
