With magical streetscapes, fascinating archaeological sites and striking nature reserves, this destination’s pretty scenery enriches its interesting history. Castile-León (or Castilla y Leon) is Spain’s largest region, its medieval relics and ancient cities hemmed in by mountain ranges and the meandering Duero River. Discover a rich region of Spanish medieval history, where beautifully preserved cathedrals, monasteries, castles and villages present a time capsule of the kingdoms of centuries past. Explore some of the region’s magnificent protected areas and hike, cycle or kayak through pristine nature reserves.
Salamanca, the region’s capital, has one of Europe’s oldest universities and a charming old town with a preserved streetscape. Experience the student atmosphere and visit busy cafés and tapas bars.
In captivating Segovia, you’ll find a fairytale-like castle, the Alcázar, as well as monumental Roman aqueducts supported by over 160 arches.
Wander within the high 11th-century Romanesque city walls of Ávila or see the spectacular Gothic and Romanesque cathedrals that characterise León and Burgos. Check out the archaeological site at Atapuerca, which holds clues as to who might have been the earliest settlers in Europe.
Travel outside of the cities to discover Castile-León’s hidden treasures of hamlets with half-timbered houses and hilltop castles. Hike through the trails of the Picos de Europa National Park or stroll around the Ancient Roman gold mine in Las Médulas.
The famed Way of Saint James (Camino de Santiago) also passes through Castile-León, presenting opportunities to see the region at a pilgrim’s pace. Find scenic destinations off the beaten trail in Covarrubias, Calatañazor, the Sierra de Francia and Medinaceli. The town of Zamora is home to the largest lake in Spain, the formerly glacial Lago de Sanabria.
Don’t miss sampling some of Castile-León’s hearty regional dishes, which include black sausage, cured meats and roast suckling pig. Try wines from the renowned Ribera de Duero region.
Reach Castile-León by flying into Salamanca Airport, which is also known as Matacán. High-speed trains connect the region to Madrid. If you want to find Castile-León’s hidden castles and medieval treasures, be sure to explore the region via its country roads and pilgrim trails.
