The Canar province is nestled deep in the Andes in the southern half of Ecuador. Its undulating landscape includes rolling mountains and deep valleys and comes close to both the Amazon rainforest in the east and the coast of Ecuador in the west. Most visitors to Canar come for the incredible Ingapirca Ruins, known as the Temple of the Sun. Learn the history of the indigenous Canari people and their hard battles against the Inca and spend some time indulging in Canar’s moderate climate as you hike, mountain bike or drive through its varied terrain. Visit the intriguing small towns and cities scattered across the province. Tour the capital, Azogues, where thousands of Panama hats are produced each year, or explore the picturesque town of Canar, an ideal place to get familiar with the local culture. Discover traditional handcrafted wares and pottery as you peruse goods in the stores along the quaint city streets or sample traditional cuisine. Indigenous markets are a great place to pick up souvenirs and support the local economy. Venture to Ingapirca to see one of the best examples of Inca ruins in the country. By far the largest discovered, the Ingapirca ruins are centred on the Temple of the Sun, a conical brick structure built around a huge rock. Learn about the rivalry between the indigenous Canari people and the Inca people, who started as enemies and settled together peaceably. For those wanting to stay overnight in the area, El Tambo offers modest accommodation and packaged tours to the ruins. Visit El Tambo’s historic church to see stunning works of religious art. Rent a mountain bike to explore Canar’s terrain. A cool climate year-round provides ideal conditions. Buses serve the region.
