A little about the area: Please note that automated distance information can be misleading in rural areas. Although some places may appear close “as the crow flies,” walking routes are often impractical.
A car is required for restaurants, shopping, and local amenities.
Poggio is an historic village situated in the hills, some 10 minutes north of Castelnuovo (which itself is circa 45 minutes North of Lucca).
This is a quaint historic, rural village with cobbled streets and wonderful views. There are plenty of good restaurants in the area within a short drive, and the property is a 10-minute walk from a railway station offering access to Lucca, Pisa, Florence and the Coast. Castelnuovo, with its outdoor swimming pool, famous market, and numerous bars restaurants is only 8 kms away.
Hundreds of hilltop villages abound and less than 3km away is the village of Camporgiano which has restaurants, bars, small supermarkets and privately owned castle.
Just across the valley is the stunningly located fortress of Verrucole and also the zip wire park which is great fun for both children and adults, and ideal for a day in the welcome shade! You can also picnic and BBQ here if you want to make a day of it.
The local attractive market town of Castelnuovo, famous for its Thursday morning markets, and with all facilities is just a 10 minute drive. This town has bars, restaurants, gelaterias, and a river...In high season the town really comes alive, and often hosts outdoor evening entertainment.
The beautiful mediaeval town of Barga with its cobbled streets, renowned restaurants, Cathedral and stunning views is a 40 minute drive, and often there is free live music here.
Lucca, with its fully intact walls can't be missed for a day out and cycling around the walls is a firm favourite with day trippers and locals alike. Here, spend the day meandering in the shady streets, sitting in the open piazzas, dining al fresco, climbing towers, visiting the Opera (this is the birthplace of Puccini) or just shopping!
The Grotta del Vento, the famous Wind Caves is also a family favourite...
There is lots to do if you wish, but the real beauty of the area is the countryside and the scattering of small villages wherever you go....

Great part of a house with a charming view from the terrace into the valley. The pool was very pleasant temperature and was cleaned daily by the very nice landlord. All in all very recommendable.
We had a great holiday. The house is beautiful and very comfortable. We enjoyed very much the privacy of the swimming pool. The area in the mountains and small villages are beautiful. The owner is very friendly and helped us also with the luggage as our car does not fit in de small street. We had a wonderful time!
The owner was very helpfull, the location is so beautiful. It takes an hrs to the see and about 45 min to Lucca Only minus is that the town do not have any restaurants or small shops for an evening straw - but we surrived 🙏
While it takes a little bit of getting to this place, it is beautiful and sublime. Poggio is a small commune set on a hill overlooking the beautiful Serchio Valley. The views from the back porch in this unit are truly spectacular. You can see the valley and the neighboring villages, many of which have hillside fortresses and churches. The drive up to the guest accommodations (there are several at this one address) is through a very narrow cobblestoned lane. We parked at the village church and our host drove our bags up the hill (moderately easy to walk) to our unit. We stayed in #4. Simply but authentically furnished. Very clean and well put together. One flight of steps to the two bedrooms upstairs. All that we needed as a couple for a five day stay. Good for a couple or a couple with two younger children (second bedroom is small). The owners provided an excellent orientation package that they sent when we made our final payment. Good directions, excellent restaurant recommendations (we took several and were never disappointed), and other helpful local info. There is very little in the town of Poggio, but there is a train station (a long walk, better to drive) where you can get a train to Lucca. The nearby villages have good restaurants and are short drives away. Be prepared: this is epic Italian driving. I have lived in both New York City and Los Angeles, and these folks are in a different league than me. The Conad supermarket in Castelnuovo is a great place to provision on your way north, but that is still a 20 minute drive to the property. So that you know, this is not the Tuscany you see on TV with the flat vineyards and the golden brown rolling hills. This is the northern part of the Province at the foothills of the Alps (which are spectacular).. I have been to both places, and I think this is more beautiful. Just me. In any event, I would come back here in a moment. Nice people. Immaculately clean apartment. Beautiful observation decks. Comfortable beds. Modern bathrooms. Everything you need (if you have a car)!

Service?
