As with all vacation rentals - read FULL description. It is guests' responsibility to understand the property before booking.
Cabin is 800 sq/ft, one bedroom with beautiful Queen-sized bed, (Serta hybrid luxury mattress) vaulted ceiling great room has a wood burning fireplace for ambiance (firewood included), a full-size futon daybed and a pull-out sofa sleeper plus dining table seating 6. All linens/towels/pillows and blankets provided. One magnificent full bathroom with antique claw-foot bathtub with endless "Insta-boil" hot water system. Tub has a shower wand, but no stand-up shower equipment. Full kitchen (all cooking and dining equipment provided), screened in back porch functions as second living room with another wood burning fireplace for ambiance, round out the living spaces. Cabin is completely off-grid with fully functioning solar system that works rain or shine (thanks to super large battery capacity) Cell service is great, no issues streaming to your devices, with free and open wifi included. 6 guests MAX. Seclusive and private, a perfect Get A Way !! Do not worry about becoming acclimated to the cabin and how it works, a complete and easy to follow guide book will be forwarded upon booking giving details regarding heating systems (propane), 2 functioning fireplaces (firewood included in rental price ) solar capabilities, bath and kitchen functionality (all function as you'd expect a normal house with minor modifications - see these modifications below). Most guests have a long list of activities, bring your out-door activity gear for hiking or kayaking, fishing gear etc. - but most guests tend to while-away their stay relaxing in the cabin and taking walks on my 11 acre mountain property. Although pets are welcome you are responsible for ANY added cleaning or damage. If your pet uses a "pee pad" please do not bring them to my cabin. House broken means they are trustworthy to hold it until you let them go outdoors. Your pet cannot be left to relieve themselves on my back porch. I can't believe I have to include this in my description but live and learn. There are two outdoor fire pits, one in front of the cabin, the other closer to the top of the property only steps from the cabin. Hiking is spectacular with the Appalachian Trail, Virginia Creeper Trail, National Forrest service trails among others minutes from the property.
The property is accessible via paved county road, and then long mountain driveway/private road. AWD, 4-wheel drive or front wheel drive vehicle is recommended to access in wet weather. Recent work on mountain driveway/private road has greatly reduced the evidence of wear and tear, including the addition of drainage ditches and tons and tons of gravel!! Typical rear wheel drive vehicle works fine, with possible issues during heavy rains. Mountain driveway/private road instructions will be forwarded with the Cabin and Property guide sent after you've booked. Check out pictures of driveway for a better idea of what to expect. Please note, ATV's, motocross and dirt bikes of any kind are not allowed on my property. If you are bringing atv's for use on designated tracks in the area, (Mountain City and Elizabethton) please leave on the trailer and do not run them on my property. Hunting is not allowed on my property.
The differences because of solar and off grid cabin are: moderated AC (available in main living space during daytime hours 10 am - 7 pm, no electric coffee maker (but a beautiful French Press that easily makes the best coffee) low but consistent water pressure with a delightful claw foot tub!) I make up for it in these ways:
During Summer and the really hot days the night temps are typically in the '60's - I open the windows to draw the cool air in using fans. During these days from 10 am to 7pm, I close the windows and drapes, turn on the AC window unit and keep the main living space comfortable. If the AC is run through-out the night, there will not be enough battery juice remaining to bounce back in the day to keep the system operating.
Slow water pressure. Just be patient, the system works, it's just not gushing. I have a deep, deep well that is State of Tenn. certified to be 99.9% pure mountain water. It's delicious, fresh and better than any bottled water. Just take your time and follow the instructions in the guide booklet for taking baths, doing dishes etc.
No electric coffee maker - there is a beautiful French Press. If you are unfamiliar - Google it, it makes great coffee.
It truly is a spectacular slice of heaven which I've taken over 25 years to develop on this mountain. The off-grid setup does not mean you are deprived of comforts and easy relaxation. It just means you'll need to get in the groove of the place and enjoy!!

Cabin was exactly what we were looking for! Terry was extremely helpful with surprise flowers for my wife! Cabin was clean and had everything ready for us! Its was a great experience!
This is such a beautiful cabin. So rustic and secluded. Definitely recommend having four wheel drive to get to property, but other than that, it is perfect.
This is a great property! It’s a quiet, clean and comfortable getaway. We had a relaxing time and the owner is readily available to answer questions if you have any.
My husband and I returned to Terry’s cabin for a second time. This time was just as nice as the first time. If you are seeking a quiet retreat in nature this hits the spot.
Terry was great about making sure that our stay went smooth. The cabin was clean, beautiful and so relaxing. The views was incredible. Our favorite spot was the back deck. It was so peaceful out there.
The cabin was lovely and clean, and the instructions, although lengthy, were very clear. We loved seeing how the solar panels provided enough energy, and the fans made the space comfortable in the heat. I loved that everything was covered up for the dogs. I felt very comfortable with my dogs being in this house.
This is a beautiful property. Very quiet and the views are awesome. The driveway is tricky. Terry gives you great instructions. I suggest re-reading them before you attempt it. Other than that, we had a wonderful time.
Wonderful mountain home! Perfectly placed on the property to experience sunrise and sunset. First time living off the grid with no service interruptions. Driving and home instructions were spot on. Love the hiking! Thank you Terry for opening up your home and allowing us to experience mountain living. Recommend and would visit again!
What a cozy cabin! Loved that even the pets are thought of. I normally bring extra sheets to put on couches and the bottom of the bed just because of our dog (Gus) shedding. Terry already had it covered.
Had wonderful views off the porch. Felt like we were in a treehouse in the woods. Was a wonderful adventure.
First, Terry's description is spot on - the driveway is tough, the hot water and bath/shower situation is weird, and the cabin is wonderful.
Second, the secluded, quiet location and lack of wifi (despite excellent cell service) make it a great place to be off the grid and truly decompress.
Third, the cabin was spotlessly clean - something hard to do in the middle of the forest.
We had a fire in the fire pit, star-gazed, read on the deck, spent some time on the lake, and enjoyed a great hike.
In summary, our stay was superb and we would go back in a heartbeat.
What a little gem. Expertly decorated to make you feel warm and inviting. Totally private and the views are amazing out every sing window. The lake is within walking distance and hiking was excellent. Terry was in communication and I’m glad you are really remote if something happened. The switchbacks were very scary. We had a one ton with duellys. The week was priceless!
Terry's off-the-grid cabin was gorgeous, welcoming, warm and exactly what we were hoping for. He made everything easy with checking in/out and was very prompt with replying to our questions. It was clear that he has really thought about how to make guests feel comfortable and ready to relax, even their pets!
Everything felt incredibly clean, which was very enjoyable. The driveway was intimidating at first but was easily manageable with a Subaru Outback.
We will absolutely be planning to visit again in the future. You should definitely visit if you're considering it!
For some one that is in recovery from triple by pass there are no railings for the steps,I had to use my family to get up the stairs. All the guniture was hard to get out of with having a pectoral flip done. The bathroom was difficult with everything being so low to the ground. I know it is not the property owner just would have been nice to know before renting. It is a great place peacful, lobed the fireplaces the outdoor fire pit was all fantastic property owner explained everything in the rules and guidelines
We had a wonderful stay in Terry’s cabin. He was very accommodating of anything we needed and the experience was an absolute joy. We had our kayaks and enjoyed a day in Holston lake as well as some fun driving to and hiking at Backbone. Terrys cabin was great for our dog Lucy too. We cooked a few meals and all went into Bristol for some delicious bbq at Delta Blue and a concert in the square. Nights were spent listening to the woods and making smores. It is the woods so there are bugs! Be sure to read the description he provides, the driveway and hot water are tricky!
This was exactly what my husband and I were looking for: a peaceful and quiet getaway. Beautiful home and property, especially during the snow storm! The owner was away during our stay but he made sure that we were taken care of with a great stand-in host. Even though the owner was not away he was great at communicating with us and making sure we had everything we needed. During our stay a large snow storm hit and the stand-in host came to make sure the solar panels were clear and we were safe. He even offered to take us into town in his truck if we needed food. Extremely thoughtful and helpful. We will be staying again in the future!
Owner was very positive and communicative. Listing accurately represented the accommodations. Very thorough fire and home documents sent describing the cabin before arrival. Even though it was summer, without air conditioning, the cabin stayed surprisingly cool. Curtains were vintage and a bit of a challenge to open. I personally felt nervous or a bit uncomfortable staying in what is clearly someone’s regular residence. However, everything was positive and pleasant and we appreciate being able to stay. A lovely secluded cabin setting.
Everything in the listing was very accurate, from the electric to the water pressure.
HIGHLY recommend 4wd or awd. He's not kidding about the road. Once you drive it a couple of times, you get used to it, but there's a learning curve.
The views and the quiet were outstanding. Be aware it is in the mountains, and you will see some bugs and maybe a lizard or two (that one was cute). Sunrise from the back porch was gorgeous!
My only suggestions would be to make a little more space for visitors' belongings, and maybe carve out some more walking paths.
Host was very easy to work with and left us on our own unless we had questions. Would definitely recommend for a nice getaway.
Thank you!
We had a wonderful stay at Terry's property, even though we were there through Hurricane Helene. Because of the solar power, we were never without electricity, water, etc, despite the terrible storm. We were incredibly grateful to be in such a well equipped house to ride out the weather! Terry was unbelievably helpful when we tried to venture out after the storm passed, only to find three trees down over the driveway and one lane road into the property. He was there with a chainsaw within minutes of us calling him and he spent over an hour cutting up and moving the trees so that we were able to get out. We cannot say enough about his attentiveness and hospitality.
Despite the storm, we were able to enjoy Bristol and Abingdon, both of which are just a short ride away. We had delicious pizza from Machiavelli's in Bristol, BBQ from Delta Blues in Abindon, and we stumbled upon the Hoppy Possum Brewer's Festival, which was the highlight of our trip. If you have a chance to visit during this festival, it's a must do for beer lovers!
Terry's cabin was exactly as described in the posting. Its completely secluded, but with everything you need for a quiet, peaceful getaway. We never felt "off the grid" since we had electricity and cell service the whole time and were able to watch tv, use our hotspot devices, etc. Once the storm passed, we were able to enjoy fires in the fireplace on the screened porch, which was our favorite spot at the cabin. We will definitely return!
