Cliffside Log Cabin w/ Large Deck for Enjoying Spectacular Views & Wildlife
This authentic log home, constructed in the early 1990s, is stunningly located on the edge of a cliff in the mountain residential community of Wilderness Ranch, just 24 miles northeast of Boise off of Highway 21 on the way to historic Idaho City. The house has almost 1,500 sq. feet of deck on three sides that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside dotted with Ponderosa pines and populated by a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, elk, and fox.
The cabin features a cathedral great room incorporating a fully outfitted retro kitchen, a six-person dining room table, a large kitchen island that can seat four, and a living room with a wood-burning fireplace (which you are free to use, but you must bring your own firewood). Two sets of glass French doors open to the deck. Also on the main floor is a full bathroom with a double vanity, shower and jetted tub (not a hot tub!), all original to the house; a master bedroom with a queen bed and glass sliding-door access to the deck; and a second bedroom with one queen bed and one twin. Please note, however, that there is currently no accessible clothes washer or dryer.
From the main floor, a log stairway leads to a large loft, which features another full bath (shower only), a full-size bed and full-size sofa bed. You'll also find there a collection of several hundred movie videos and DVDs for your viewing pleasure on a flat screen TV! Because the loft has log railings with large gaps that present falling hazards, this area is not suitable for unsupervised small children.
Wilderness Ranch has privately maintained dirt roads and the road leading to the cabin is narrow and steep in some places. While a two-wheel drive vehicle is fine for accessing the cabin most of the year, you must have a four-wheel drive vehicle with studded snow tires and/or chains during the months when there is likely to be significant snow on the mountain (November through March). There can be significant climatic differences between Boise and Wilderness Ranch. Even when there is no snow on the ground in Boise, the roads at the ranch can be snow covered and icy. Also during periods of heavy rain (spring and fall), the roads can become muddy and difficult to transverse. No refunds will be given for poor road conditions or inclement weather.
Please note that as an authentic log cabin, with exposed log interior walls, in a wilderness area, there more issues with dust and insects than a regular house. In the fall (September/October) when the temperatures drop, we have challenges with wasps trying to get into the cabin, notwithstanding that we employ an exterminator. So if the sight of a wasp or insect in the house would bother you, this is not the vacation rental for you!
Be aware that cell phone coverage at the ranch (and on the way from Boise) is spotty or not available at all. However, the house does have a landline phone.
Please note the map may show Bogus Basin ski area as close-by, but those roads are not open in winter. To get to Bogus Basin, you need to drive into Boise and then back out. Trip takes about 90 minutes.
Final note: Pets and domestic animals of any kind are not allowed anywhere on the property, inside or outside the house. Violation of this rule will subject you to immediate removal, forfeiture of your security deposit and additional charges.

This Vrbo was everything I hoped for and more. The views were breathtaking, the space was clean and unique, and every detail was thought through. Communication with the host was top notch. Peaceful, cozy, and exactly what you need to recharge in the mountains. I couldn’t have been more satisfied — highly recommend!
Property was very cozy, well supplied with kitchen appliances/utensils and cleaning supplies, and relaxing. The perfect setting for a much needed reset.
We stayed here with intent of enjoying the property and maybe some of the nearby hot springs. Due to heavy snow there was a road closure that prevented us from getting to the springs but the cabin was so nice we didn't mind staying to make snowmen and warming up by the fireplace!
If you are looking for a nice quiet secluded spot for a getaway, this is it. My wife and I celebrated our anniversary at this beautiful Log Home. It had everything you need in the kitchen and was peaceful and quiet.
This place was awesome!!!
The location up on the cliff makes you feel like you are in your own private world. We opted out of the long day trips to stay and enjoy relaxing on the deck.
I will definitely recommend this place to others.
This cabin met and exceeded our expectations. It was very comfortable, beautifully decorated and the hosts communicated very well and timely. The view from every window is stunning. Walking into this cabin made you feel like you're going back in time. The decorations made it feel like stepping through a time warp with all the great old and new eclectic things.Would definitely stay here again!
This cabin was perfect for our weekend. Well-stocked kitchen for food prep. Comfy beds. Wild turkeys, deer, and birds of prey visited. Thank you for sharing your cabin. :)
We stayed here after a 5 day backpacking trip in the Sawtooth Wilderness. It was the perfect place to unwind and relax. The house was clean and communication was great. We didn’t have any problems with a 2 wheel drive rental car, but definitely see how it could be an issue in winter months. We took an evening drive and saw so many turkeys, elk, and deer!
It's in a lovely location, and the directions to find it were perfect (follow them). We loved the morning walks in the neighborhood and the quiet. We know we were warned it was a rustic cabin, but the bugs were annoying (even though the bug company was just there), and one mattress should be replaced. According to a log cabin builder, the exterior needs to be sealed again to prevent the bugs.
Clean and great view.
Make sure you have an all wheel drive/4 wheel drive vehicle.
WiFi Internet was sufficient, but TV wasn’t able to access Internet. So, not able to watch streaming apps.
Enjoyed the view immensely!!!
We stayed two nights, it was lovely. The cabin is a real cabin with the wonderful smell of wood and the gentle hint of the aroma of many comfortable fires in the fireplace. We loved it. We enjoyed the fabulous selection of interesting movies and the memories of childhood invoked by the large collection of VHS and DVD movies for those of us who were alive before the advent of streaming services. The cabin is convenient to Boise and to the back country of the mountains around Boise. One drawback that didn’t affect the 5-Star rating was that we had limited time to book the place, and while there was an indication that 4x4 might be necessary, we couldn’t get ahold of the owner or manager quick enough to be sure. We booked it anyway, and then had to scramble to borrow a 4x4 vehicle from a friend to get up the steep road to the cabin after talking to the manager. Still had a great weekend though.
My husband and I stayed here for a little anniversary weekend away. It was quiet, had everything we needed to cook, and beautiful views.
Two things for future guests: the listing says basic soaps. I should have clarified before we stayed…there was only hand soap in the bathrooms. You will need to bring your own body soap and shampoo. Thankfully we had some of our own. Also, if you plan to do much online…don’t. The WiFi isn’t powerful enough to do a whole lot. However! This is a cabin for getting away. We loved the 100’s of vhs movies. It was like stepping back in time and reliving our youth.
Would recommend for some romantic alone time.
The hosts were extremely welcoming, the cabin was very well thought out. It was very peaceful and relaxing with great views! And the natural light beaming through all of the windows is so calming!
Our stay was fantastic! The cabin was perfect and had everything you could possibly need to make the experience amazing. The décor and amenities were impeccable. We will definitely be returning for another stay!
No hot tub, small jacuzzi tub. Insects inside but not bad, to be expected in the hills, maybe host could fumigate a day before would be nice so bugs aren't landing in your food as you prep meals. Great scenery and wildlife in the area. Hot spring about 20 min up the road near Idaho city. Hosts were great and smooth check in check out. Other cabins around you but pretty good privacy
