Blankenberge Travel Guide

Tourist Guide

Golden hour at the Belgian coast can be so beautiful. This time with a view on the famous Pier of Blankenberge!
The “Belgium Pier” has a rich history and is now part of the Belgian national patrimony. This unique structure - a 350-meter-long bridge in the sea - is recognized far beyond the national borders. The very first cast-iron pier dates from 1894, but was destroyed in the First World War. In 1933 a new, concrete pier was built, which underwent a thorough renovation in 2003. The Belgium Pier was the first on the Atlantic coast of the European mainland and has since then only been joined by Scheveningen (Netherlands). #Culture

At low tide you can see the entire substructure of the Belgium Pier.

The pedestrian mall in Blankenberge, Belgium, a seaside resort with sandy beaches and a harbour with fresh seafood sold nearby. All within walking distance from the train station for a day trip. We had good fish n chips at a restaurant along the ped mall. (June 2016)

Enjoy a relaxing seaside holiday in Belgium! Walk along the wide beach or to one of the neighbouring villages or spend a day in Bruges.

If you're looking for a fun holiday destination in Belgium, Blankenberge might be exactly what you're looking for. You can combine lazy days at the beach with a day out in Bruges, which is only a 15-minute train ride away.

The two dykes that were built here around 1100 attracted fishermen who settled in the area between them. This settlement later grew into Blankenberge. In the 19th century, the English brought seaside tourism to the Belgian coast and Blankenberge's popularity steadily grew. But tourism really took off after the completion of the railway line between Blankenberge and Bruges in 1863.

Blankenberge's main attraction is of course its beautiful beach. Enjoy the beautiful view, take a dip in the sea and work on your tan. The pier in Blankenberge, built in 1933, is also well worth walking along. Head north on the beach and you will reach Zeebos, a beautiful nature reserve where you can walk and cycle.

Sea Life Blankenberge is a great place for the kids to get a close look at more than 2,500 aquatic animals. And Bruges is just a 15-minute train ride away! Visit Prinselijk Begijnhof, take in the beauty of the canals in the city centre and take one of the many boat tours. Climb the 366 steps to the top of the Belfry and take in the spectacular view of the city and the surrounding area.

Parking in Blankenberge is cheap and sometimes even free! Explore the area by bicycle or on foot, or take the tram that runs along the coast to any of the other seaside resorts.

If you're travelling to Blankenberge by car, the drive from Calais will take approximately 1.5 hours. If you're travelling by train, the journey from St Pancras will take just under 5 hours. If you're in the Netherlands, the drive from Rotterdam will take approximately 2.5 hours. You can also get to Blankenberge by train.

Enjoy the sun, the sea and the beach in this lovely Belgian seaside resort.
