Looking for unique accommodation? Try searching the range of independent hotels in Bilbao. You’ll find properties with distinctive décor and a local flavor, as well as great tips and insights into Bilbao from owners and staff.
You’ll find independent accommodation all over Bilbao. There are options across the city centre, including hotels close to the busy shopping street of Gran Via and the iconic Guggenheim Museum. For independent hotels a little further out, check the Casco Viejo area to the east, or search around Bilbao Bay, a coastal area dotted with pretty towns and seaside resorts.
There’s no template for independent accommodation in Bilbao. You’ll find independent hotels of every type and star rating, from practical and affordable one-star properties to five-star luxury pads. It’s also worth looking in the hills and countryside around Bilbao, where there are some charming rural independent hotels waiting to be discovered.
Bilbao’s Guggenheim Museum was designed by celebrity architect Frank Gehry and is the city’s most famous sight. Some pieces – including Jeff Koons’ famous Puppy, a huge floral highland terrier – are outside, but head inside for the best in contemporary art and sculpture, featuring plenty of Spanish and Basque artists as well as international names.
Next, take a stroll along the riverside boardwalk to the Maritime Museum where you can discover Bilbao’s shipbuilding heritage. The museum is housed on the site of the old dry docks of the Astilleros Euskalduna shipbuilders.
End your day in the Casco Viejo, the oldest part of Bilbao. This is the heart of culinary Bilbao, and the perfect place to discover the tradition of pinxto (tapas). Take a tour around the pintxo bars which line Plaza Nuevo. Try local delicacies such as grilled squid and deep-fried ham croquettas, washed down with sparkling txacoli wine. And after a busy day soaking up Bilbao’s culture, return to your independent hotel for a night of rest and relaxation.
