We were pleased to find the cottage easily but more than a little frustrated that we were unable to open the front door on arrival. Having unloaded all our belongings to the front door, it was then necessary to get back in the car and drive almost all the way back to Bideford to get a mobile signal to call Clare; the cleaner who was our point of contact. She subsequently informed us the door was recently painted so may need kicking! On return to the cottage, 2 of my boys gave a big push along with a bit of a kick! It turned out that it needed a strong push or pull every day we were coming or going from the cottage. This was frustrating to note.
However, we found the cottage to be in good order and bedrooms beautifully presented. Having put everything away at night, I was shocked to discover that all my cool bags left in the kitchen had been thoroughly investigated by mice. There were a large number of mouse droppings along with urine trails inside the bags. The mice were in addition to the bats in the attic, something Clare told us about 2 days before arrival! Hearing them scratching about above us as we settled for the night was a little unnerving, more so for one of my son's. One of my 11yr old twins cried in his bed the first night, scared by an unexplainable experience!
The location of the cottage was great in terms of access to places of interest but all the extra unexpected guests were something that should have been spelt out in the information advertising the cottage. In that regard I feel it is masking true features which guests should be aware of prior to booking.
