Bawjiase is a small community in the Central region, close to the border with Greater Accra, and is an excellent base for exploring everything the southern areas of Ghana has to offer – from their beaches and coastline to lively cities and towns.
Both Accra and Winneba are easy to reach from Bawjiase in just over an hour, so you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city, and enjoy the attractions of the coast.
Bawjiase is in the Central region of Ghana, which combines spectacular coastline with some of Ghana’s most fascinating areas of natural beauty. On the Central region’s coastline, you’ll find attractive beaches as well as historic towns and buildings. Some of the fortified trading posts along the Central Region coast are UNESCO World Heritage Sites that recognise the universal value of these forts and castles built by European traders between 1482 and 1786, and which stand now as monuments to the history of Afro-European relations and the horrors of the slave trade.
Part of any visit to Bawjiase and the Central region of Ghana is to sample the local traditional cuisine. Some regional dishes you should try include kenkey – dough dumplings served with fish – and fried plantain cakes.
The Central region is also home to the Kakum National Park, where you can explore the preserved primeval rainforest via trails and hanging bridges beneath the forest canopy.
A vibrant city of nearly three million people, Accra, the capital of Ghana, is easy to get to from Bawjiase and has plenty of things to do and see. The National Museum tells Ghana’s story through its collection of artefacts and informative displays, while the Osu neighbourhood is home to some of the best nightlife in the country. Don’t miss the lively Makola Market in the city centre with its food stalls and stands selling all manner of textiles, or the historic Jamestown district with its landmark lighthouse.
Winneba is about an hour south west of Bawjiase and is a bustling university town famous throughout Ghana for its annual Aboakyer festival, celebrating the hunting traditions of the region. Winneba is also one of the most historic towns of Central region and still an important fishing centre along this stretch of the Atlantic coast.
