El Eixample is an extension of the city, designed by Ildefons Cerdà and begun in 1860, and is one of the most unusual urban spaces in the world. The personality of Barcelona is rooted in large measure in the unique design of this district. El Eixample is a relatively small district which is built around the main road which runs through it, the Paseo de Gràcia. The charming Quadrat d'Or (Golden Square) area is bordered by Aribau Street, the Paseo de Sant Joan, the Rondes and Diagonal Avenue. The consolidation of Quadrat d'Or as the center of the Barcelona bourgeoisie, which occurred during the last decade of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th, coincided with the spread of Modernism. A stroll through the area will reveal to attentive visitors a wealth of historic buildings, which were built when the bourgeoisie moved away from the old city to the center of El Eixample around 1900.
