Find hotels in Barao de Melgaco from £46

The best area to stay in Barão de Melgaço is typically within the town centre itself, particularly around the main square, Praça Tiradentes.

This central area is where you'll find the majority of the town's limited accommodation options, often guesthouses or pousadas. It's the hub for local life, with small shops, eateries, and access to the riverfront where many tours depart. The area is fairly compact, making it easy to get around on foot.

For travellers looking to experience the Pantanal, staying in a lodge or fazenda outside the main town is often preferred. These accommodations are usually situated directly within the wetlands, offering immediate access to wildlife viewing activities such as jaguar safaris, birdwatching, and piranha fishing. They provide an all-inclusive experience, often arranging transfers from Cuiabá airport and offering guided excursions.

The best time to go to Barão de Melgaço is during the dry season, from May to September, for optimal wildlife viewing and comfortable exploration.

During these months, the water levels in the Pantanal are lower. This concentrates the wildlife around the remaining water sources, making animals like jaguars, capybaras, and caimans easier to spot. The weather is generally sunny and pleasant, with less humidity and cooler temperatures, which is ideal for boat trips, safaris, and walks.

For travellers who prioritise seeing a wide variety of wildlife, this period offers the best chances.
